Acadian actress Viola Léger died on Saturday, according to a release from Carol Doucet at Le Grenier musique. She believes that the character of La Sagouine never could have remained as popular for as long without Léger. In 1985, she started her own theatre company, the Compagnie Viola Léger. In 1999, she created the Viola Léger Foundation, which awarded scholarships to actors at the beginning of their careers. “Viola Léger did not play La Sagouine, she was La Sagouine.”After the news of Léger’s death, Minister of Official Languages Ginette Petitpas Taylor took to Twitter to praise the late Acadian actress.

Richmond Police Officer David Edward Stone, a Louisa County resident, was arrested last week on 50 child pornography charges. Stone has served on the Richmond police force since 2006, reports The Daily Progress. And the Richmond police have been doing a creditable job in the past several months. But Stone reminds us that occasionally the cops are the criminals. Spotting and purging bad actors is all the more imperative when police departments are drastically understaffed, recruitment is suffering, and the temptation is strong to take anyone who seems remotely qualified.

Supermarket fridges aren't like your fridge at home, which typically contains less than 200 grams of refrigerant. On average, it found a single supermarket emits 875 pounds (400 kilograms) of HFCs a year, equivalent to carbon emissions from 300 cars. In the U.S. alone, it calculated supermarket HFC leaks cause as much global warming as burning 22 million tonnes of coal. Since a typical refrigeration system lasts about 30 years, decisions made now about what refrigerant to use can affect global emissions for decades. The federal government will start to offer carbon offset credits for projects that cut refrigerant emissions, including those in supermarkets.

The Minister was shot at while attending a program in Odisha’s Prajaraj Nagar. Transplant patients who have no matching directed donors need non-directed anonymous donors to provide kidneys. The agency says for patients waiting for a kidney, transplant outcomes are better with kidneys from a live donor. has Canada's second-highest number of non-directed anonymous donors — 78, compared to Ontario's 105 — according to CBS. Vancouver General Hospital's medical director of kidney transplant, Olywn Johnston, says there are about 300 patients in B.C. A mining corporation on Sunday apologized for losing a highly radioactive capsule over a 1,400-kilometre stretch of Western Australia, as authorities combed parts of the road looking for the tiny but dangerous substance. The truck transporting the capsule arrived at a Perth depot on Jan. 16. Emergency services in Western Australia have called on other Australian states and the federal government for support finding the capsule because they lack equipment. A release from management company Le Grenier musique says Léger died Saturday in Dieppe, New Brunswick. Léger was best known for her portrayal of the character La Sagouine in the play of the same name by Antonine Maillet, playing the role more than three-thousand times and winning the Dora Mavor Moore Award in 1981 for her performance. In 2013, she was recognized by the Governor General’s Performing Arts Awards with the Lifetime Artistic Achievement for theatre. Léger was named an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1989.
