A baby girl named Afraa, who miraculously survived under the rubble after a deadly earthquake in Turkey and Syria, has found a new family and is thriving in good health. After spending days at a hospital in north Syria, Afraa was placed under the custody of her paternal aunt and her husband, who adopted her. Lora Cicalo, a mainstay at The San Diego Union-Tribune for more than three decades, was named senior editor of the newspaper Friday. A lifelong resident of San Diego County, Cicalo joined the San Diego Tribune in 1987 as a copy editor and assistant news editor. After the Tribune merged with The San Diego Union in 1992, she served in a number of positions, the most recent being managing editor since January 2015. Cicalo holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a master’s in mass communications from San Diego State University and is a part-time lecturer at her alma mater. While Alden Global Capital owns the Union-Tribune, it will be managed by Alden affiliate MediaNewsGroup under a management services agreement.

A Kings Mountain woman who served as a youth leader at a church has been charged with felony child sexual offenses, according to Kings Mountain Police. “On July 28th, 2023, Kings Mountain Police Department Criminal Investigation Division (CID) received a report of a sexual assault on a minor,” a press release said. He was born in Chatham, ON, but made Nova Scotia home for the majority of his life. He moved to Nova Scotia to work for the Department of Development, where he met his wife of 29 years Catherine "Cathy" Olna Ball. He is survived by son, Michael; daughter, Suzanne; and son, David (Sherri). He is also survived by his grandchildren, the light of his life: Katie, Meghan and Joshua. As per his wishes there will be no funeral but a private celebration of life at a later date.
