Prime Minister Mark Carney says he's not worried about the prospect of increased oil production from Venezuela challenging Canada's energy exports because Canadian oil is cheaper, cleaner and lower-risk. "That makes Canadian oil competitive for the medium and long term." After launching military strikes against Venezuela and arresting Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, Trump said U.S. oil companies would go into the country, fix the oil infrastructure and oversee the industry. Oil wealth will help Venezuelans, Carney saysCanada's oilsands produce nearly five million barrels of oil per day, the vast majority of which is exported to the U.S. "Every barrel the United States sources from Venezuela could mean one less barrel these refineries would buy from Canada.

CBC News is calling 2025 a “turbulent” year for Canada’s auto sector — one dominated by tariff whiplash, softened EV demand and major production shifts that hit workers from Windsor to Oshawa and Ingersoll in Ontario. Auto-specific tariff threats followed, and OEMs reported billions in hits as steel and aluminum levies added pressure. In September, Prime Minister Mark Carney paused and launched a review of Canada’s EV sales mandate, saying the move is meant to relieve some of the “extreme pressure” automakers face from tariffs. In October, Stellantis scrapped plans to build the Jeep Compass at its Brampton assembly plant, leaving roughly 3,000 workers facing uncertainty. General Motors, meanwhile, announced it would cut a third shift in Oshawa — a move expected to eliminate about 750 GM jobs and trigger further supplier layoffs.

What a job promise meansPremier Tim Houston announced the policy at the same time he announced a plan to allow people to enter education programs without having completed an undergraduate degree. The latter plan never came to fruition, in part because such a change cannot happen without the agreement of the teachers union. Still, Day called for the creation of a comprehensive recruitment and retention plan that makes clear how people can get into the education system and stick around once they’re there. Union representatives for other people who work in the same system made their own case for enhanced retention efforts.
