The first Canadian military flight evacuating citizens, permanent residents and their families from Israel has left Tel Aviv, Defence Minister Bill Blair announced Thursday. Approximately 130 passengers are on board the Royal Canadian Air Force planes, Blair said. The Canadian government has moved to implement an evacuation plan to retrieve Canadians stranded in Israel following devastating attacks by Hamas over the weekend and amid escalating violence in the region, as Israel strikes the Gaza Strip. Planes will take passengers to Athens, ministers said earlier in the week, and from there, commercial flights will be able to return Canadians to this country. Blair said the second military flight is boarding soon.

While hundreds of Canadians struggle to flee war-torn Israel, some say last weekend’s terror attacks instead prompted them to stay put. “I said to my wife on Sunday night, I can’t leave … these are our people, we have to stay to provide moral support. “It’s heartwarming to see the reaction on the people.”Zeifman was in synagogue when word about the attacks broke, he said. “I think it’s part of Hamas’ strategy now to weaken the country by showing them killing the hostages,” Zeifman said. “It’s really, really important that people not think that Jews are running away from Israel,” Zeifman said.

Overall, we demonstrate that community science monitoring is a flexible tool that has the potential to enhance and, in some cases, replace mandated governmental monitoring work. One avenue to continue research through laboratory closures was the implementation/expansion of community science monitoring programs. Their proximity to the GTA and natural surroundings make the Kawartha Lakes an extremely popular tourist and cottage destination in Ontario ( City of Kawartha Lakes 2020 ). Monthly water samples were collected in duplicate by community science volunteers from June to September 2020. Water samples were collected monthly from June to September, with Scugog, Balsam, and Cameron lake samples collected on a Tuesday and Sturgeon and Pigeon lake samples collected on the following Thursday.

Ohio: You Can Vote NowEarly voting has begun in Ohio, so if you’re registered to vote in this November’s election, and you already know how you’re going to vote, why wait? And if I am, my vote will still count. Incidentally, here in Ohio, two issues are up for statewide ballot: Issue 1, which is the one that keeps busybodies out of other people’s uteruses, and Issue 2, which would generally legalizes marijuana use. But my irritation that Ohio will smell incrementally more like an unwashed armpit is a minor thing compared to the much larger societal harms that come from marijuana being illegal, so. Obviously if you are voting in Ohio this election season, I urge you to vote as I did on these issues, and to study up on the local races and various levies that will be on the ballot as well.

On the side arguing that free speech is dead is Dr. Greg Garrard, a professor of Environmental Humanities at UBCO, and Dr. Joel Bakan, a Professor at UBC’s Allard School of Law. This is the second event of its kind at UBCO designed to debate whether the digital age has choked off free speech or empowered it to thrive. “UBC Okanagan Debates is a signature event for our campus. Are secretive social media algorithms limiting those who speak their minds, or is the digital age supercharging free speech, granting anyone with an internet connection the power to express and influence regardless of their language or geography.

The Arctic Council has taken another step towards resuming work, with a meeting this month with the body’s six Indigenous groups. The council, consisting of world’s eight circumpolar countries and the Indigenous groups, known as Permanent Participants, said the meeting in Girkonjárga-Kirkenes in Norway was held to discuss areas of focus. Eye on the Arctic contacted some of the Permanent Participants with Canadian membership for details on the priorities they shared at the meeting but did not receive responses. Earlier this summer, they headed a meeting of the states and permanent participants to establish guideline consensus for restarting the working groups. Charles Lewis, the chief of the FPW Fire Brigade, says 90 per cent of the calls they receive are to medical events. (Emergency Health Services - image credit)A fire chief in Cumberland County says he's frustrated by long wait times for ambulances in his area, which have left his volunteers responding to more medical calls than fires. And we don't have the answers to tell them, I mean, it's just the wait times are just, it's way too much." More to be doneJeff Fraser, the executive director of the EHS branch for the province's department of health and wellness, said he understands Lewis's concerns about ambulance wait times in Cumberland County. I wish I had a silver bullet for Chief Lewis and all of the Nova Scotians," he said.
