CBC Saskatchewan is looking for residents who want to write a First Person column about the real-life impact of the changing planet. Meet Mary Lawson, small-town northern Ontario girl, and author of the buzz-making book, A Town Called Solace. Lawson, who was 55 years of age when her debut novel, Crow Lake, was published, is a distant relative of the beloved Lucy Maud Montgomery, author of Anne of Green Gables. CBC Radio listeners chose Crow Lake as one of the top 40 essential Canadian novels of the decade. However, along the way she penned a short story, which was set in a mythical northern Ontario town in the 1940s, a time frame consistent with the author’s childhood. “I loved writing that first story, Crow Lake, because it allowed me to go back home in my mind.

It is the central question underpinning the entire rationale for a pollution price. Yes, the quarterly pollution price rebate helps, but we heard more was needed. That same logic to adjust policies in the name of equity is what drove the government’s decisions on home heating oil. Heating oil is extremely expensive, on average costing up to four times what alternatives such as natural gas or electric sources cost. Therein lies the challenge: Many Canadians using heating oil simply do not have the money to make the switch.

Announcement by the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and CitizenshipOn October 27th, the Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, Marc Miller, announced his plans to change the International Student Program to include more measures protecting prospective applicants from fraud. Most of these cases were identified during processing, however 450 were not caught and ultimately resulted in the issuance of a study permit. Since then, over 600,000 study permit applications have been submitted to IRCC, a very significant number that almost certainly includes fraudulent applications. Foreign students still represent a key source of growth for the country and Canada will continue to welcome their study permit applications. It was a heated Monday vote over exempting the carbon tax on home heating. Just last month, McDonald became the only Liberal to back a non-binding Conservative motion to repeal the carbon tax entirely. He then did a brief media tour to claim that the carbon tax was rendering his party unelectable all along the Atlantic Coast. But on a much less sweeping Conservative motion, McDonald changed his mind and voted the Liberal line. The only material thing that’s changed in the interim is a Trudeau government “carve-out” on the carbon tax for home heating oil.

Governments introduced vaccine passports in 2021, as COVID-19 vaccines were more available to the public. Understanding how effective these policies were could help public health officials across the country prepare for future pandemics, the researchers say. Provincial governments, including Saskatchewan's, introduced vaccine passports in 2021, after the first major waves of the COVID-19 pandemic and as people began to get COVID-19 vaccines. Researchers compared vaccination rates, across age groups and time, in the seven weeks before and after vaccine passports were implemented across Canada. Saskatchewan Health Minister Everett Hindley told reporters Tuesday the provincial government is not looking to implement vaccine passports at the moment.
