As 2024 begins to take shape, one reoccurring question I hear on the street and on my podcast is: What happened to Canada? With each new development and each new conversation, I’ve been forced to wonder: What has happened to my country? I never used to get asked about what happened to Canada. This new line of thinking originated at elite American universities and spread to Canada through social media. A creeping censoriousness, driven by social media mobs and amplified uncritically by our media, has only intensified this dynamic.

While Canadians generally are alarmed at rising incidents of antisemitism, a new poll finds that young Canadians are dramatically out of sync with the rest of the country on the subject. A plurality of virtually every category answered “Jews”: Retirees, Canadians with a bachelor’s degree, full-time workers. The most conspicuous exception was Canadians aged 18 to 24, who framed the country as being caught in a tide of anti-Muslim hate that easily eclipsed anything happening to Canadian Jews. Of the 1,600 Canadians surveyed for the January poll, 46.2 per cent reported seeing a recent increase in “hateful comments” against Jews, while 37.8 per cent reported the same thing for Muslims. Overall the results were flipped — although not by much; 52 per cent trusted the Palestinian line while 55 per cent trusted Israeli accounts.

Netanyahu has long opposed a two-state solution but has generally avoided saying so explicitly, at least in English. Biden has insisted that the U.S. and Israel are working together toward a two-state solution. Opposition to the two-state solution is by no means limited to the Netanyahu government, however.

The Peel Regional Police have released one of their occasional pleas for people to use the 911 emergency phone number appropriately and responsibly, this one with a recording of a customer who called about an issue with her bank. In the call, the operator picks up the call and asks if the caller needs police, fire or ambulance services. “I need the bank on the Westwood Mall’s phone number.”In her defence, the caller is quick to apologize when it’s explained to her that 911 is for life-threatening emergencies or crimes in progress. “Close to half of those calls were 911 misuse or hang-ups.”The police website includes some other useful 911 tips.
