Workers at a National City Starbucks voted Thursday night 21-3 to unionize. Workers at an Encinitas location voted 21-2 to unionize in May, and a Hillcrest location voted 15-2 in August. Starbucks said in a statement that the next step will be to begin bargaining over a contract with the National City workers. The National City unionization is part of a national effort that has led to nearly 400 stores unionizing over roughly two years. There are four other Starbucks locations in National City.

The online used car retailer, Carvana, will open its newest vehicle vending machine off Interstate 8 in Mission Valley on Wednesday. Unlike a traditional used car dealership, customers order a car online and either have it delivered or they can pick it up via the novelty machine (complete with a giant coin). Additionally, there was an added demand for used cars as the supply of new cars was constrained by chip shortages and delayed availability for parts. During the fourth quarter of 2023, San Diego’s used car market declined about 3.5 percent year over year, according to data from the New Car Dealers Association of San Diego County. As a result, used cars are sitting on the lot a little bit longer.

Lamey warns that the heavy rain, which is forecast to fall for most of the day Saturday, will not be absorbed by the ground, causing challenges in water draining from properties. Officials with CBRM and HRM say crews are working to clear catch basins to prepare for the heavy rainfall. The average home buyer actually needs nearly $1 million to afford the average home in some of Canada’s most expensive housing markets, according to Ratehub analysis. A Re/Max report released earlier this month pointed to housing prices, high interest rates and tax policies driving Canadians to Alberta in a wave of interprovincial migration.

The chance to make history isn't the best reason the Liberals and NDP have to reach an agreement on pharmacare, but there's something to be said — maybe even a lot — for stability. The confidence-and-supply agreement between the Liberals and New Democrats — the deal that has helped keep this Parliament on track — is unprecedented at the federal level. The Liberals do not appear to have the fiscal room to cover that and the NDP has not demanded it. The NDP could still see plausible reasons to walk away from the confidence-and-supply agreement.

The snow conditions have been hard this season at many ski areas across North America. Now, Shames Mountain, near Terrace, British Columbia, is offering a generous gesture by offering free lift access to skiers and snowboarders who hold passes to any mountain that is currently shut down or pausing operations due to poor conditions.
