Thomas want local MP Cathy McLeod defeated in fall electionTo the editor:The Conservative government’s Bill C-51 (Anti-Terrorism Bill), like the so-called Fair Elections Act of last year, is receiving widespread criticism. Our MP Cathy McLeod thinks C-51 is awesome, like she thought the Fair Elections Act” was awesome. She also thinks the recent trade deals, which Canada has signed, are great. These so-called “trade deals” allow foreign companies and investors to sue Canada over laws made by any level of our government they don’t like. We need an MP who will work for our interests, not against them.

The RCMP has launched a criminal investigation as it manages a cybersecurity attack targeting its networks. In an email sent to staff Friday, RCMP chief security officer Paul L. Brown said the force is managing a cyber event and urged employees to stay vigilant. The situation is evolving quickly but at this time, there is no impact on RCMP operations and no known threat to the safety and security of Canadians, a spokesperson for the RCMP said in a statement issued to CBC News. While a breach of this magnitude is alarming, the quick work and mitigation strategies put in place demonstrate the significant steps the RCMP has taken to detect and prevent these types of threats. The RCMP says it is working to determine the extent of the security breach.

CLC will be joining the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition (EPC) and Quebec Life Coalition for this event along with other legal and medical experts. Had it passed, it would have prevented medical assistance in dying (MAID) for mental illness alone. (http://news.nationalpost.com/2015/01/09/stephen-harper-reflects-on-canadas-first-prime-minister-sir-john-a-macdonald/)However, Parliament’s Junior Version of FAQs on the Senate states: "Canada's first Prime Minister, Sir John A. Macdonald, called the Senate a place of "sober second thought." (http://www.parl.gc.ca/About/Senate/FAQJuniorVersion/brochure-e.htm)In ironic contrast, the current Senate, as reshaped by Harper, is no longer performing this constitutional function. (http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/politics/senators-to-vote-on-conservatives-union-bill-despite-error-in-legislation/article22102064/)The Senate had earlier sent this error-ridden Bill back to the House of Commons the first time it was presented. Sent back to them by the Conservative majority a second time with continuing errors, the Harper-appointed Senate majority passed it and later, for the first time, legislated limited debate in the Senate on certain bills. He errs, ironically, because he has altered the Senate from the place of "sober second thought" of Sir John A. Macdonald to an extension of the will of the prime minister of the day.

This Local reporter turned up the volume to hear Maureen and Colin Dodd request a song to go with the theme ‘breaking up with January.’ Here is their travel story. It wasn’t too long ago, though, that the couple were owners/operators for 40 years of Dodd’s Greenhouses on Concession 2. They spend the winter months exploring the islands between Grenada and St Lucia, known as the Lesser Antilles, and they store the boat on land, in Grenada, during the hurricane season. Using a dinghy to bring them ashore, Colin and Maureen explore waterfalls, local markets and get to know the locals. It’s the best breakup song ever.”If you have a breaking up with winter story, please email [email protected].
