Police have raided 1,132 restaurants in Dhaka over the last three days in the wake of the deaths of 46 people in a blaze that ripped through a building housing several eateries on Bailey Road last month. People were prosecuted on 887 instances as part of the campaign crackdown, Dhaka Metropolitan Police announced in a statement on Wednesday. It said they are conducting raids on hotels, restaurants, risky shops selling gas cylinders, and chemical warehouses in the capital. Over the past three days starting from Sunday, they raided a total of 1,347 establishments, including 1,132 hotels and restaurants, 207 gas cylinder shops, and eight chemical warehouses, it said. The deadly blaze raced through the seven-storey Green Cozy Cottage, mostly housing restaurants, on Thursday.

Sri Lanka is committed to repaying its debt within the 2027-2042 schedule, President Ranil Wickremesinghe said on Wednesday, adding that successful debt restructuring negotiations will bring annual external debt payments down to 4% of GDP. The island nation defaulted on its foreign debt in May 2022 after its economy ran into an unprecedented financial crisis triggered by a severe foreign exchange shortage. Sri Lanka kicked off negotiations with its creditors after securing a $2.9 billion bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in September 2022 but has still to reach an agreement with private bondholders. The country reached an agreement with its bilateral creditors including India, China and Japan last November.

Experts said the level of oxygen in the water dropped due to the waste from the burnt sugar, and so fish and other aquatic species are floating to the surface due to the lack of sufficient oxygen. SATKHIRA, March 6, 2024 (BSS) - Two college students were killed and another was injured in a motorcycle accident in Dhapua bridge area under Assasuni upazila of the district today. The deceased were identified as Nayan Ghosh, 19, son of Niranjan Ghosh of Amania village under Kaliganj upazila, and William Ghosh, 18, son of Jagannath Ghosh of the same village. They were HSC second year students of Kaliganj College. Police and fire service personnel rushed to the spot and recovered the bodies from the spot and sent to Satkhira Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy, OC said.
