Prigozhin, as leader of the notorious Wagner Group, had been the point man for Russia in Africa since Wagner first began operations on the continent in 2017. I research the role of governance in advancing security and development as well as the influence of external actors in Africa, including Russia. The Russian government would also need to recreate the multidimensional dealings that made Wagner’s operations effective in shoring up client regimes. The way that Prigozhin was eliminated must also give African leaders pause. And that’s not a vision many African leaders share.

France get out,” the demonstrators chanted, repeating slogans heard at various rallies in Niamey since the coup d’etat on July 26. Niger’s military regime had fired a new verbal broadside at France on Friday, accusing Paris of “blatant interference” by backing the country’s ousted president. Since then, tens of thousands of people have joined in the protest at a roundabout, close to the Niger military base where French soldiers are stationed. Niger’s military rulers have also announced the “expulsion” of the French ambassador Sylvain Itte and said they are withdrawing his diplomatic immunity. But French President Emmanuel Macron last Monday hailed Itte’s work in Niger and said he remained in the country despite being given a 48-hour deadline to leave.

Gabon’s coup leader vowed after being sworn in as interim president on Monday to restore civilian rule through “free, transparent and credible elections” after a transition and amnesty prisoners of conscience. Oligui said he was “surprised” at foreign criticism of the coup. The military had been prompted by a desire to avoid bloodshed following “an electoral process that was obviously loaded,” he said. Five other countries in Africa — Mali, Guinea, Sudan, Burkina Faso and Niger — have undergone coups in the last three years, although their circumstances are different from Gabon’s. The three Sahel countries, for instance, saw military takeovers after elected presidents failed to stem a bloody jihadist insurgency.

Nigerien authorities reopened Sunday September 3 the airspace for airlines nearly one month after the junta in power closed it on August 06. The country’s civil aviation authorities indicated the air space is reopened for domestic and international commercial flights. The decision however does not apply to military and other special flights that are still subject to authorization, local media “Actu Niger” reports. The Nigerien National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP) which seized power on July 26 after toppling West-backed President Mohamed Bazoum closed the airspace on the backdrop of the possible military intervention by the regional Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to restore Bazoum. Late last month, the ECOWAS said it was still prioritizing diplomacy over military intervention though it has already prepared standby forces.
