PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Gold miner Resolute Mining has reported a 47% increase in the measured and indicated resources at the Syama North gold project, in Mali. “The infill drilling programme at Syama over the first half of 2023 was an outstanding success with a 47% increase in the measured and indicated resources. Having 2.7-million ounces in the measured and indicated categories will further enhance our Phase I Expansion project at Syama which is on track for commissioning in the first half of 2025,” said Resolute CEO Terry Holohan. The A$40-million to A$50-million expansion to 250 000 oz/y will be underpinned by Syama North. Such recent shallow discoveries confirm the Syama Greenstone Belt under our control remains vastly under-explored and capable of further significant expansions.

In a diplomatic twist, Libya has chosen to overlook Italy's proposed candidate to lead the European Union's mission in the country, opting instead for a French diplomat. Interim Libyan Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh's government in Tripoli has rejected Italy's candidate, Nicola Orlando, in favor of France's Patrick Simonnet. Nicola Orlando's rejection in July stemmed from concerns raised by the European External Action Service (EEAS), the EU's diplomatic arm. Orlando, who had previously served as Rome's deputy head of mission to Tripoli and special representative to Libya, was perceived as too closely associated with the country's intricate political landscape. In contrast, Patrick Simonnet, the French candidate, lacks prior experience in Libya.

The first Africa Climate Summit opens Monday in Kenya to highlight the continent that will suffer the most from climate change while contributing to it the least. The African continent is larger than China, India and the United States combined. The vast expanse of the 54-nation African continent is relatively unserved and unwarned. As climate shocks such as Somalia’s worst drought in decades become more common, better recording of weather data is a critical need for decision-making. The lack of weather data in much of Africa also complicates efforts to link certain natural disasters to climate change.

SEOUL, Sept 3 (Reuters) - North Korea conducted a simulated tactical nuclear attack drill that included two long-range cruise missiles in an exercise to "warn enemies" the country would be prepared in case of nuclear war, the KCNA state news agency said on Sunday. The first Africa Climate Summit opens on Monday in Kenya to highlight the continent that will suffer the most from climate change while contributing the least. Significant investment in Africa’s adaptation to climate change, including better forecasting, will be an urgent goal at the September 5-6 meeting. In contrast, the US National Weather Service budget request for fiscal year 2023 was $1.3bn. The lack of weather data in much of Africa also complicates efforts to link certain natural disasters to climate change. “We urgently need robust climate data and research in this highly vulnerable region,” their report said.

The group said that the Northern leadership and political leaders are dissatisfied with Tinubu’s Presidency and are waiting patiently for the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal verdict on September 16th, 2023, to know their line of action. They are weighing options, and in case of any presidential rerun election, the North will likely work against Tinubu. “The continuous closure of borders, and halting of electricity supply to the Niger Republic will continue to enrage the North and it will come with consequences from them. Ohanaeze Ndigbo called on President Tinubu to firmly end the hardships Nigerians are encountering and he should be wary of the North. The group said that pacifying the North now will calm down their nerves, especially through the reopening of the closed borders with the Niger Republic and their restoration of electricity.

Contrary to warnings that the Lebanese currency would sharply collapse after Salameh’s departure, Mansouri was able to control the exchange rate. This month, the central bank paid public sector salaries in dollars by purchasing dollars from the market with Lebanese pounds transferred by the government for this purpose. The biggest problem is that the size of the credit was so large that it depleted the central bank’s hard currency reserves, reaching the people’s deposits. The central bank cannot keep buying dollars from the market indefinitely. “As long as I control the monetary supply at the central bank, there is no fear of a fluctuation in the dollar exchange rate,” he remarked.
