The Africa Climate Summit, which wrapped up in Kenya last Wednesday, was an effort to forge a harmonized approach to the continent’s negotiating stance on climate diplomacy ahead of the United Nations COP28 Climate Change Conference in November. Hosted by Kenyan President William Ruto, who is also the current rotating leader of the Committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change, the summit succeeded in producing the Nairobi Declaration, now viewed as Africa’s defining response to the climate crisis. The manifesto, titled “Driving Green Growth and Climate Finance Solutions for Africa and the World,” delineated Africa’s critical priorities in addressing the crisis, to which it contributes the least of all the world’s regions, but from which it suffers the most. These included calls for urgent global climate action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, new global taxes on carbon emissions and ramped-up investment in clean energy to leverage the continent’s vast natural assets in critical minerals for the green transition. Addressing Africa’s urgent need for predictable climate financing, the summit urged wealthy nations to pay their “climate debts.” At the same time, it called for an overhaul of multilateral financial systems to restructure the debts of insolvent nations that, staggering under the burden of repayment, are unable to redirect scarce resources toward addressing climate shocks.

The new PL program for MENA students is coordinated through the Asian American Cultural Center. “The whole reason that I applied to be a MENA PL is because I really wish I had a MENA PL my first year, so just the fact that this is happening made me so excited,” Hatami said. Before the AACC-MENA PL program started this year, there had been just one MENA student serving as an AACC PL for the 2022–23 academic year — Zahra Yarali ’24. However, there was little specialized support for MENA students, and MENA utilization of either Af-Am House or AACC PLs was limited, per Yarali. In 2018, a group of MENA students worked with Yale administration to receive a room at 305 Crown St. to host MENA cultural events.

Africa, the world’s richest region for renewable energy, must tap into its vast untapped resources to drive sustainable development and industrialization — this was the main message coming from fruitful discussions on the Africa Green Minerals Strategy (AGMS) during the recent Africa Climate Summit 2023 in Kenya. At over 5500 exajoules per year, Africa boasts 44.8% of the world’s total technical potential for renewable energy, making it the world’s richest region for renewable energy potential. To meet these demands, the speakers at the Africa Climate Summit 2023 called on African leaders to prioritize the goal of diversification of the continent’s energy sources, with a growing focus on renewable energy alongside fossil fuels, particularly natural gas. The Africa Climate Summit 2023 served as a platform for fruitful discussions on the AGMS and its potential to reshape the continent’s economic landscape. Speaking during the Africa Climate Week 2023 that was organized in parallel with the Africa Climate Summit, African Minerals Development Centre (AMDC) Director, Marit Kitaw, noted that the continent needs to learn from the past and benefit from its own minerals before they are exported.
