Southern California is experiencing the calm before the storm. Forecasters say a strong system is headed our way and, starting Sunday, poses the threat of thunderstorms, flooding, gusty winds and dangerous waves. Heavy rainfall is expected, persisting into Monday as the storm makes its way across the region. Although heavy rains are expected, Kittell said this storm system won’t be as severe as the storm last Christmas that set daily rainfall records around the region. That so-called Pineapple Express was forecast to be the strongest atmospheric river storm to hit Southern California in nearly two years, according to the National Weather Service.

“I was tackled, I was pepper-sprayed, I was detained [while] exercising a First Amendment right,” Huerta, a prominent California labor leader, told HuffPost in an interview this week. “Should we use a general strike as a tool? “And unless we’re willing to be bold, we’re going to find ourselves out of that equation… So should we use a general strike as a tool? Among them is Shawn Fain, president of the United Auto Workers union, which arranged for its members’ contracts with Ford, General Motors and Stellantis to end on that date. I think labor has to ask… what are we willing to risk as a means to protect families and to make change?”

But even during his announcement, he said the border czar lied when he said ICE agents haven’t been targeting churches, schools or hospitals. Just a day earlier, Nate said, ICE officers detained people by a grocery store. One community that ICE officers have been relentlessly harassing is Columbia Heights, a heavily Latino Minneapolis suburb. She had just checked her phone and discovered ICE officers were sitting outside of her house, again. She’s one of several teachers who volunteer to do grocery runs for immigrant families too scared to leave their homes, leaving food on their front steps.

Federal Trade Commission Chairman Andrew Ferguson has accused Apple of violating US law by suppressing conservative-leaning news outlets on Apple News. Ferguson pointed to research by a pro-Trump group that accused Apple News of suppressing articles by Fox News, the New York Post, Daily Mail, Breitbart, and The Gateway Pundit. The FTC chair claims that Apple News might be violating promises made to consumers in its terms of service, but his letter doesn’t cite any specific provisions from the Apple terms that might have been violated. “Recently, there have been reports that Apple News has systematically promoted news articles from left-wing news outlets and suppressed news articles from more conservative publications,” Ferguson wrote in the letter to Apple CEO Tim Cook yesterday. If these companies are as committed to free expression as they claim to be, it’s time to take a stand.”

The ultimate authority on how to handle the deluge of media inquiries was Mayor Karen Bass, according to an internal email reviewed by The Times. Erik Scott wrote in an Oct. 9 email to a Bass aide, then-interim Fire Chief Ronnie Villanueva and others. Yusef Robb, an advisor to the mayor, said Thursday that Bass is customarily involved with the decision-making of city departments. The emails reviewed by The Times show that the firm, the Lede Company, had a role in reviewing and suggesting edits to the after-action report. Other internal emails reviewed by The Times show that Bass met with Villanueva about the after-action report in mid-July.

Researchers in Australia are raising flags about GLP-1 weight-loss medications potentially raising the risk of a rare disease. Nutrition in focusFor GLP-1 users who are losing weight quickly, Collins emphasized the importance of an adequate intake of nutrients, vitamins and minerals. The White House just delivered a knockout punch to Barack Obama’s credibility — and they used his own actions against him. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt publicly torched the former president for opposing voter ID laws while simultaneously sharing photographic proof that Obama himself used ID to vote in 2012. Nearly 90% of American voters support requiring photo ID for elections, according to multiple polls showing 83-84% approval rates. Yet House Democrats voted almost unanimously against the election integrity overhaul, with only one Texas Democrat breaking ranks. But the White House wasn’t finished.

- Lucía Vázquez for WSJConsumer prices rose 2.4% in January from a year earlier, cooler than the 2.7% recorded in December, the Labor Department said Friday. The latest annual number had some help, since a high inflation reading from January 2025 has now dropped out of the past 12 months of data. Month over month from December, consumer prices in January rose a seasonally adjusted 0.2% and core prices rose 0.3%. The central bank aims to keep inflation at a 2% annual pace, but has missed that target for about five years. Aggressive interest-rate hikes punctured the blistering price increases that slammed the economy in 2022.
