Editors note: The quotes from Council Members depicted below were all from emails sent to constituents from their official City email accounts this week. It is a reckless, ideological suicide pact that would leave Minneapolis legally isolated, fiscally bankrupt, and physically less safe. The “Funding” FallacyThe Council’s demand to “halt federal funding” is a classic example of cutting off one’s nose to spite one’s face. In 2026, Minneapolis is already struggling with a police staffing crisis and a $2 billion budget under immense strain. The City Council must reject this resolution.

Last month Newsom traveled to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, and in November to the U.N. climate summit in Belém, Brazil — mocking and condemning Trump’s policies on Greenland, international trade and the environment. The purpose of the Munich conference was to open a dialogue among world leaders on global security, military, economic and environmental issues. Along with Friday’s discussion on climate action, Newsom is scheduled to appear at a livestreamed forum on transatlantic cooperation Saturday. “This is about economic prosperity and competitiveness, and that’s why I’m so infuriated with what Donald Trump has done,” Newsom said. The authority, which the Trump administration has moved to rescind, was also the basis for California’s plan to ban the sale of new gasoline-powered cars by 2035.

There is perhaps no greater sign of the coal industry’s decline than the Trump administration’s demand this week that the Pentagon purchase more energy generated by the fossil fuel. Washington has already forced multiple coal plants to remain open beyond their scheduled retirements, trampling local control over energy projects and driving up electricity prices. A little more than two decades ago, coal generated most of the country’s electricity. Non-carbon energy sources such as solar and wind, which together already eclipse coal’s output, have also cut into the business. It is telling that despite these economic forces, no new coal plants have been under development for more than a decade.
