Russia doubled down on its longstanding position of declaring Western forces in Ukraine “legitimate targets” on Thursday, days after France and the UK pledged to send troops there in the event of a peace deal. Russia has long opposed the presence of any Western troops in Ukraine. Tuesday’s agreement set out the legal framework for allowing British and French troops to operate in Ukraine, Starmer said, after the two countries had previously stated their willingness to deploy troops there. “We can only get to a peace deal if Putin is ready to make compromises,” said Starmer on Tuesday. “For all Russia’s words, Putin is not showing that he’s ready for peace.”This is a developing story and will be updated.

Millie Bobby Brown as Eleven in Stranger Things NetflixThis article contains spoilers for the final episode of Stranger Things. Many Stranger Things fans were left disappointed this week when a widely-shared fan theory about a bonus episode of the hit show failed to come true. AdvertisementThis theory suggested that the epilogue in the last episode of Stranger Things was actually a fake reality concocted by Vecna to make the residents of Hawkins believe he was dead, and that the real ending to the show would be revealed in a bonus episode released on 7 January. Of course, 7 January has now come and gone without a new episode of Stranger Things, and while a select few are still speculating that the upcoming behind-the-scenes documentary might still be the bonus episode everyone was hoping for, others have now resigned to the fact the theory wasn’t accurate. However, those who took a look at Stranger Things’ socials in the last few days might have already worked this out for themselves.

Corpus Christi, Texas —The judge overseeing the trial of a former Uvalde school district police officer rejected a defense motion to declare a mistrial on Wednesday afternoon. Prosecutors opened the day by alleging Gonzales, an officer with the school district police force, failed to locate, engage or delay the gunman when he arrived at the school. Gonzales’ defense team argued they would show, through a detailed timeline, he did the best he could and that the deaths and injuries were solely the fault of the shooter. Former Uvalde school district police officer Adrian Gonzales arrives at the Nueces County Courthouse in Corpus Christi, Texas, on Tuesday, January 6, 2026. In separate military operations Wednesday, U.S. forces seized a Russian-flagged tanker after a weeks-long pursuit across the Atlantic Ocean and apprehended a second vessel near the Caribbean Sea, marking the latest enforcement of President Donald Trump’s blockade of Venezuelan oil exports. The Russian-flagged tanker Marinera was boarded by U.S. forces in the North Atlantic, officials said, after evading the blockade in mid-December. It switched to a Russian flag around New Year’s Day, nearly two weeks after U.S. forces started pursuing it. Satellite imagery from mid-December reviewed by TankerTrackers.com, an independent oil tracking firm, suggests the vessel was not carrying oil because of how high it was above sea level. The Bella 1 is one of at least five tankers involved in the Venezuelan oil trade that have changed to the Russian flag since U.S. forces seized the Skipper on Dec. 10, according to a Washington Post examination of data provided by TankerTrackers.com.

All over Juneau, boats have struggled to stay afloat amid a record-breaking onslaught of heavy snow. At the four harbors overseen by Matthew Creswell, the Alaskan city’s harbormaster, eight boats have sunk in recent days. Even as the snow continues, a salvage company has been hauling sunken boats out of the water to minimize damage from pollution. “We’re raising boats as we speak.”The record snow is expected to give way to more rain later this week. That could put further pressure on roofs, boats and storm drains clogged with ice.
