Defense Secretary Hegseth came to his position from his job as a weekend host on the Fox News Channel. “Right now, the threats to our Constitution aren’t just coming from abroad, but from right here at home. I did all of this in service to this country that I love and has given me so much. They include the Navy Pilot Astronaut Badge, earned by fewer than 200 service members, and the NASA Distinguished Service Medal. I never expected that the President of the United States and the Secretary of Defense would attack me for doing exactly that.

The fatal shooting of Renée Good last week, as ICE officers and residents faced off on a residential street here, has brought new attention to these activities. “Could a prosecutor make a credible case that a person is interfering if they’re blocking an agent’s car or slowing them down? If law enforcement can make a claim that it’s impeding enforcement, they can make a case,” he said. But many law enforcement experts have questioned the officer’s decision to position himself in front of Good’s running vehicle and open fire. “It doesn’t create a right to commit traffic violations or physically attempt to block a law enforcement vehicle,” he said.

A year ago, I wrote about the rise and risks of Christian nationalism in Indiana government (see https://commentaries.cberdata.org/1288/indiana-is-ground-zero/ and https://indianacitizen.org/hicks-commentary-the-three-risks-of-christian-nationalism/). Christian nationalism is the belief that the U.S. is an explicitly Protestant Christian nation ruled by Christian doctrine carried out by a government filled by Christians. The reason is simple: Antisemitism is a hallmark of Christian nationalism (see https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/ssqu.13248). The vapidity of Christian nationalism has worn thin with elected leaders. In that domain at least, the influence of Christian nationalism appears to be in trouble.

Iran’s Massive Protests: Government Cracks DownTehran, Iran —(Map)People across Iran have been protesting for over two weeks. The protests began over the economy, but have grown into larger protests against the government. In the past, Iran’s government has sometimes made small changes to its rules to help bring an end to protests. The problems in Iran’s economy are serious, and are unlikely to improve for a long time. Much will depend on how determined the protesters are, how Iran’s government responds, and whether outside forces, like the US, get involved.

That same year, the US Surgeon General warned that women’s smoking caused nervousness, insomnia and “ruined the complexion” — a medical admonition framed through the lens of feminine vanity. In a theocracy that polices women’s bodies and behaviours, public smoking by women is itself transgressive. “The Smoking Feminist”Today in feminist history: Women deserve to smoke in public too (March 27, 1922). Democrats are getting the news they’d been hoping for out of Alaska, with former US Rep. Mary Peltola launching a Senate campaign on Monday morning. The one-and-a-half-term former congresswoman was elected at-large from the small-population state in a 2022 special election and reelected that fall, before losing in 2024. She had been hotly pursued by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer as Democrats’ best prospect in a state that last elected a Democrat to the Senate in 2008. Peltola will run against Republican Sen. Dan Sullivan, who announced last year he’d seek a third term. Her agenda, she says, is “fish, family and freedom.”Peltola invokes the legacies of longtime Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens and Rep. Don Young, both Republicans, whom she says used to put the state over politics.

Moore agreed, explaining that a younger friend may expose an older friend to new ideas or ways of seeing the world. A younger friend may also be more empathetic about marriage and kids, considering they’re closer to the beginning of their journey. In such cases, an older friend might have a hard time being vulnerable because they feel pressured to have all the answers. Over time, the younger friend may eclipse their older friend’s accomplishments. Her advice was to set boundaries, so the younger friend doesn’t come to rely on the older friend as a therapist or life coach.
