Published in the RadioDoc Review, this presentation, first given at the MeCCSA Radio and Audio Studies symposium, pays tribute to the narrative podcast as a vibrant audio art/journalism form, destined to survive and even benefit from the video podcast turn. 1Soon media watchers started describing the new tranche of video podcast hosts with their chat/interview formats as reinvented late night TV talk show hosts. In it, one of the UK’s most esteemed audio producers fearlessly proclaimed – at last – that the Video Podcast Emperor Had No Clothes. A narrative podcast is a sonic journey that draws on texture, tone and temporality, evoking individualised sensory responses as it unfolds in real time. So, viva the narrative podcast and its passionate tribe of makers.

Research for The Sunday Times suggests that well-connected towns and cities are delivering the best physical and mental health outcomes for older people. The study, carried out by Health Connect Global, underpins The Sunday Times’ new Growing Old Index, which ranks the healthiest and happiest places to retire in England. Solihull ranks third, supported by a strong happiness score and longer-than-average life expectancy. Wolverhampton takes fourth place, driven by shorter A&E waits and a higher-than-average number of GP surgeries per 100,000 people. Walsall doesn’t make the top ten overall, but it receives a special mention for having the highest number of GP surgeries per 100,000 people in England.

The Associated Press reported state TV gave no cause for the 86-year-old’s death, with the announcement following joint US-Israeli strikes on the country. It comes after US President Donald Trump claimed Khamenei had died in the attacks on Saturday morning and urged the Iranian people to seize “the single greatest chance … to take back their country”. The US and Israel described the attacks as a “pre-emptive” strike against a Tehran government intent on developing nuclear weapons. Following the strikes, Sir Keir Starmer convened the Government’s emergency Cobra committee on Saturday morning, before consulting with European and Gulf allies. Later on Saturday, Sir Keir spoke to Mr Trump to discuss the situation and set out the UK’s role in defensive operations in the region.

A PRIMARY school in Henley has been judged to meet the “expected standard” by the education watchdog. Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School in Greys Hill was inspected by Ofsted in December for the first time since November 2021. Safeguarding requirements were fully met and the school met the “expected standard” in all categories, including achievement, curriculum and teaching, early years, inclusion, leadership and governance. In the report, Neil Pilsworth, His Majesty’s lead inspector, and Lorraine Grecco, the Ofsted inspector, said most pupils achieve well, which is reflected in their attainment in national tests at the end of Year 6. The report said: “Leaders and the governing body work purposefully to raise aspirations for what pupils can achieve.

The Tehran residence of the former Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, was also destroyed, and his fate was not immediately known. Back in Washington, Trump declared himself “not thrilled”. It was critical for sustaining a major aerial war as well as in helping defend Israel against the inevitable Iranian backlash. The US had already been sucked in by its volatile president to a major war that quickly became regional.

Four months after The Sunday Times began its Get Britain Reading campaign, readers have donated £50,000 to provide books for people in need and a further 500 have volunteered to read to children every week in schools. Like its six existing centres, these book banks will be based inside food banks and provide mostly new novels, donated directly from publishers, to those who would not be able to afford them. The funding injection has helped to pay for staff who liaise with publishers and food banks, and to train volunteers who work at the stalls. Sunday Times readers have also pledged thousands of hours of their time to serve as reading companions in schools through Coram Beanstalk, encouraging pupils to discover the appeal of reading for their own enjoyment. Since October, 490 Sunday Times readers have applied to become volunteer reading helpers in schools through Coram Beanstalk.
