If she did, she would know I am not one, but what she wanted was to politicise this because it is politics that this is very obviously about. What this comes down to is a demand from farmers that the state should support their lifestyle choices, whatever the cost to the state might be. As I tweeted last night:I admire the ability of these people to mobilise, but my conclusion is that farmers do not deserve a shred of sympathy for all this. Something deeply sinister is going on here, and unlike most people in dire straits in this country, farmers have options available to them and a very comfortable way out of their dilemma. The politics of privilege are being played here, and I find that extremely distasteful.

Write to letters@thetimes.co.ukSir, Will Lloyd gives an eloquent account of how many farmers feel (“Starmer’s farmer bashing may bloody us all”, Nov 18). The government is out of touch with the reality of a farming life. It claims that the majority of farms will not fall foul of the imposition of inheritance tax but does not seem to appreciate who grows the food that the population relies on; instead it has penalised those who have dedicated their lives to producing it. Farming is a hard and, financially at least, unrewarding way of life: to make a 1 per cent return on capital is considered acceptable. Farmers chose to do it down the generations because the way of life is incomparable.

Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer, appears to suggest that it is only a matter of time before British-made Storm Shadow missiles are used by Ukraine against targets in Russia. The issue came to light after US President Joe Biden authorised the use of long-range Atacms missiles. Government sources, quoted by The Times newspaper, stressed that the Atacms and Storm Shadows have different technical specifications, suggesting that the US decision does not directly bind the UK. Starmer said he did not want to go into “operational detail”, stressing the sensitivity of the situation, however, a senior government source quoted by the newspaper said that Starmer “wants to allow Ukraine to use the weapons as it sees fit for its own self-defence”. The tiny farming village of Llanfyllin, where I spent my childhood summers, has a population of about a thousand. Nestled in the remote Welsh hills, the Cain Valley is about as far removed from Silicon Valley as anywhere you could imagine. Our family home has no phone reception and no broadband access. So you can imagine my surprise when the venture capital firm I co-founded backed a Llanfyllin tech entrepreneur as part of the most competitive AI seed-funding round in British history. Surprise turned to astonishment when CuspAI’s chief executive, Dr Chad Edwards, told me that his classmate at Llanfyllin High School was the former Manchester United first-team coach Eric Ramsay, now the youngest manager in the history of
