Write to letters@thetimes.co.ukSir, Janice Turner criticises the mindset of leaders who think they always know best (“Voters are sick of lectures from lanyard class”, May 10). Instead of trying to win back trust by protesting their authenticity, leaders might heed the new Pope’s lesson in humility. As Fraser Nelson writes (“Calm, unflashy Pope is just what world needs”, May 10), Leo describes himself as a “faithful administrator”. This evokes the ideal of a public servant who doesn’t claim to have all the answers but empowers the people who do know what works best when it comes to creating a good school environment, running a business, setting up a food bank or steering young people away from gangs. Britain’s government on Monday promised to tighten migration rules and make it harder for newcomers to permanently stay in the country, in a sign of the increasing political pressure on Prime Minister Keir Starmer to cut immigration numbers. In a speech from Downing Street, Mr. Starmer, who leads the governing Labour Party, accused his predecessors of allowing immigration to run out of control and effectively creating an experiment with open borders. “Today this Labour government is shutting down the lab. The experiment is over. We are taking back control of our borders,” he said, adopting the slogan used by pro-Brexit campaigners ahead of Britain’s referendum on leaving the European Union in 2016.

On a wet Wednesday morning in April, Ashley Holroyd had a steady but slow stream of customers into his coffee shop in Barrow-in-Furness, an industrial town in northwest England. The cafe, Coffee D’Ash, had been open for only about six months, and it barely filled the cavernous space. Despite the empty storefronts on the same street, Mr. Holroyd is certain he has a prime location. BAE Systems, Britain’s largest defense company, is planning to open a training facility for hundreds of workers right next door. Like many other defense companies, BAE is in the midst of a rapid expansion because of an increase in military spending in Britain.

They are riding high in the polls, as Labour struggles. "When people come to our country, they should also commit to integration and to learning our language," Starmer will say. "Every area of the immigration system, including work, family and study, will be tightened up so we have more control. "The system for returning foreign criminals has been far too weak for too long," said Cooper. "This "radical package of reforms" would also target lower-skilled immigration, said Cooper. It will include new visa controls "lifting the threshold for skilled worker visas to reduce lower skilled migration", she wrote in the Sunday Telegraph.

"Every area of the immigration system, including work, family and study, will be tightened up so we have more control. Enforcement will be tougher than ever and migration numbers will fall,'' Starmer said in excerpts of a speech to be delivered on Monday. "We will create a system that is controlled, selective and fair. "Immigration has been a potent issue in Britain since 2004, when the European Union expanded to Eastern Europe. The new rules will mean 50,000 fewer visas for these workers next year, Cooper said.Chris Philp, Cooper's Conservative counterpart, said his party will support such proposals but they don't go far enough.

King Charles III was busy last week marking the 80th anniversary of the Allied victory over Nazi Germany and preparing to fly to Canada to open its Parliament later this month. But his public schedule was eclipsed yet again by a highly publicized eruption from his estranged younger son, Prince Harry. Two years after his coronation, his reign is shaping up as both eventful and oddly unchanging in its core narrative: that of a beleaguered father managing a messy brood. “There is an overhang in the way we see Charles’s reign,” said Ed Owens, a historian who writes about the British monarchy. “It hasn’t really gotten going, nor are we sure how long it will last.”

A brace for Mason Mount to move Manchester United into the Europa League final should have done his confidence the world of good. The past two years since leaving Chelsea have been tough with injuries but he delivered his best performance in a red shirt against Athletic Bilbao when Ruben Amorim needed him. Mount was given the opportunity to kick on from his cameo, starting against West Ham United on Sunday, but he looked as flat as the rest of the United squad in a 2-0 home defeat. It’s no secret that Amorim will want to bolster his attacking options in the summer and reports that he is targeting Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo could spell trouble for Mount if he can’t make a consistent

The Women’s Super League season ended in familiar fashion, with Chelsea romping to a sixth straight title — this time going unbeaten throughout the campaign. But what was the best goal of the season? Erin Cuthbert (Chelsea) This is a tricky one. It would feel silly not to pick a Chelsea player, but their dominance has been underpinned by a solid unit rather than a standout individual. The 26-year-old midfielder provided tenacity, reliability, leadership and big-name nous across the season, characterising Chelsea’s no-nonsense success.

It made a good story which the Shetland stringer, Wishart, Lerwick, would phone down to the national press. Most in-depth reporting, higher quality journalism, in what’s left of the press is behind paywalls. The Times and Financial Times, for example, produce good quality content, but most folk don’t want to payfor it when they can get headlines free of charge. As author Ian Dunt has remarked, when journalism was made free it was the death-knell for serious reporting. We are fortunate in Shetland that there are still going to be reporters at the court and council and hopefully investigative journalism is not dead.
