The Chancellor is widely reported to have decided to cut national insurance rather than the more expensive option of a 2p reduction in income tax. Experts warned that a 2p reduction in national insurance contributions would not by itself be enough to stop the tax burden reaching record levels by the end of this decade. The Chancellor will reportedly announce a 2p cut to National Insurance contributions in tomorrow’s Budget. But, combined with freezes in the thresholds at which national insurance is paid, it will mean that the biggest net beneficiaries are those earning £50,000, who gain a net £1,200, the foundation said. The Resolution Foundation said the £20 billion of cuts to employee national insurance are set against the context of around £35 billion of tax rises through the six-year personal tax threshold freeze.

Drip by drip, statement by statement, Conservative MPs are fleeing the green benches of the House of Commons for pastures new. Consider the historical context: in 1997, ahead of a much-foretold routing courtesy of Tony Blair, a full 75 Conservative MPs wandered willingly into the wilderness. Another factor worth treating here is that some Conservative MPs will want to play no part in a post-election leadership contest. Nonetheless, it would be wrong to treat the full 59 outgoing Conservative MPs as a monolith, (not least of all because some will currently be mid-“chicken run”). The media commentary that will follow, and the fatigued vibes such an exodus exudes, will strengthen the feeling of malaise that envelops Conservative politics.

He’s played for two of the world’s greatest football clubs and was a world cup winner by the age of 25. Paul Pogba was talented and sought-after by top-flight clubs – until he wasn’t.

Year two of the Gallagher High Performance Academy will feature 10 sevens coaches, including Saracens full-back Sarah McKenna and Leinster wing Emily McKeown, participating in a programme now extended to all formats of the women’s game. “Having been part of it, World Rugby and Gallagher have brought to life what they said they wanted to do,” Hunter told the PA news agency. “It is a brilliant initiative, one that has been about making really positive change and immersing coaches within high performance teams.”Hunter retired from playing in 2023 after winning a world record 141 caps. She led England to World Cup glory in 2014 and was named women’s world player of the year two years later. “Knowing the talent that is out there and having sat as part of the high performance academy, their knowledge of the game is incredible.

JK Rowling has branded trans campaigner India Willoughby a man as she ramped up her attacks on gender activism. Rowling was responding to a now-deleted tweet from Willoughby, 58, in which she indicated she wanted to kidnap SNP MP and gender activist Joanna Cherry. If you think women calling this person a man is more offensive than him publicly fantasising about kidnapping women, I can't help you." I am every bit as much a woman as JK Rowling. The debate about whether JK Rowling is a transphobe is over."

The West Ham United game was an opportunity for Amadou Onana to dictate the play for Everton but he looked to me like he was hiding. Onana wanted to showcase his ability at the Etihad Stadium but I didn’t see any of that against West Ham United side who were much lesser opposition. There were no forward passes or running with the ball 10 or 15 yards to break the line of that midfield. When you are on the ball, show your quality a bit more. Manchester United have got top quality players but they’re in turmoil right now with pressure on their manager.

NATO’s defence is predicated on the assumption that each country will spend at least 2% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) on defence. A year later, Philip Hammond, the UK Defence Secretary, acknowledged that Libya had ‘cruelly exposed the imbalances and weaknesses in NATO and thus the scale of the task facing European NATO nations’. He made clear that he wanted European defence expenditure to increase markedly, and that Libya had exposed the countries that ‘could but wouldn’t; and those who would but couldn’t. Is it right that the UK should be the only European NATO nation taking part in action that aims to benefit all European nations? Ultimately, the UK should exert whatever pressure it can on our European allies to get them to spend more on defence.
