Starmer has long advocated using frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine, as contributing to the loan without them would be difficult, reports The Times . Over £8 billion of Russian assets are frozen in the UK, and Starmer has consistently supported the use of Russian funds to assist Ukraine. Without access to the frozen Russian assets, making such a contribution would be challenging. The Times concluded that coordinating these actions with other non-EU countries holding Russian assets, such as Canada and Japan, could strengthen the signal of solidarity with Ukraine. The EU Council's hesitation on December 18-19 to seize Russian frozen assets was influenced by Russian threats, US pressure, Belgium's concerns, and opposition from countries such as Hungary and Slovakia.

The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) group achieved the milestone at Sellafield, marking progress in long-term efforts to dispose of the UK’s plutonium stockpile. The processed material is now ready for eventual disposal in a Geological Disposal Facility (GDF). David Peattie, chief executive of the NDA group, said: "This UK-first milestone demonstrates the unrivalled expertise of the NDA group, with special recognition for the Sellafield team whose innovation and specialist skills have made this achievement possible. The achievement marks the start of a programme at the Sellafield site to process around 400 cans of plutonium residue, a by-product from historic manufacturing processes of fuels and other materials. The officials were not authorised to discuss publicly the ongoing military operation and spoke on condition of anonymity.
