"Britain today faces a future that is more dangerous and more divided. There's no doubt that our democratic values are under threat. That is why we will introduce a bold new model of national service for 18-year-olds," Sunak said in a statement. The Conservative Party said the proposal would be funded by cracking down on tax avoidance and evasion, and by diverting money from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund , which existed to reduce regional economic inequality.Labour politicians derided the announcement. "The national service we need from our young people is to vote for change on 4th July," said Andy Burnham, mayor of Greater Manchester.Interior minister James Cleverly told broadcasters there would be no criminal sanctions for skipping mandatory service but that people will be compelled to do it, without providing further details.Asked by the BBC if forcing adults to volunteer was at odds with the Conservative Party's liberal tradition, Cleverly said: "We force people to do things all the time. "He cited compulsory education or training for teenagers until the age of 18 as an example.

Schengen Entry/Exit Scheme due October 6th this yearThis article in the Guardian refers mainly to Eurostar and the like, but it applies at all entry points into Schengen. Now fingerprints and photos are nothing new for visitors to the US, along with needing an ESTA, but it is new for Schengen and the first time you enter after the scheme starts will be a bit slower (a lot slower at UK ports I suspect), but after that you can use the e-entry points, for three years anyway.ETIAS will be introduced at some point next year. You will need both.Of course we have heard all this before and it has been delayed, but now they seem to have a fixed date for it.

"This new, mandatory national service will provide life-changing opportunities for our young people, offering them the chance to learn real world skills, do new things and contribute to their community and our country," he said in a statement.Despite Sunak saying it would be mandatory, his interior minister James Cleverly told Sky News on Sunday that there would be no criminal sanctions for any young person who refuses to take part. The Conservatives, in power since 2010, estimate the scheme will cost around £2.5 billion ($3.2 billion) a year, with the first teenagers taking part in September 2025.Young people who choose to sign up for a placement in the forces would "learn and take part in logistics, cyber security, procurement or civil response operations", the Tories said.Volunteering could include helping local fire, police and NHS services as well as charities tackling loneliness and supporting elderly, isolated people, the party added.Political commentators viewed the announcement as a headline-grabbing attempt to draw clear dividing lines between the Conservatives and the main opposition Labour Party , which enjoys double-digit leads in opinion polls.Labour, led by Keir Starmer, branded the announcement an unserious, "desperate" unfunded pledge from a party "bankrupt of ideas".Britain had national service between 1947 and 1960, with men between the ages of 17 and 21 serving in the armed forces for 18 months.Several European countries, including Norway and Sweden, have some form of temporary conscription

Proposals to ban access to social media ignore the experiences of young people and steamroll over this complexity. This holds true to other research which suggests digital policy reform regularly omits the perspectives of children and young people. Online harms and social media are understandably emotive topics but our current debate is too focused on adult fears rather than children’s lived experience.

EU officials who helped write the AI Act and EU Commission Vice President Josep Fontelles also made trips to Sacramento and Silicon Valley in recent weeks. This week, EU leaders ended a years-long process with the passage of the AI Act, which regulates use of artificial intelligence in 27 nations. There are some notable differences between the EU law and what California lawmakers are considering.
