Minimum pricing can be very effective in reducing demand for cheap high-strength alcohol amid concerns about affordability fuelling problematic drinking - according to a study on the impact of the measure during the COVID lockdown. As a flat-rate form of minimum prices applying to all alcohol products based on their alcohol content, Scotland and Wales were among the first countries in the world to implement a MUP policy in 2018 and 2020, respectively. However, this is not the pattern they observed over the full six months after the MUP introduction in Wales. Similarly, as in Scotland, MUP appears to have had a persistent demand-dampening effect on cheap alcohol. Wales and Scotland used their devolved powers to introduce the same MUP, at fifty pence per alcohol unit (50ppu), applicable to all beverages.

The Guardian recently reported on the selection of New Zealand’s Tree of the Year 2024: www.theguardian.com/…“A lone rātā that appears to be striding across the landscape has taken gold in New Zealand’s tree of the year competition. The New Zealand Arboricultural Association – which runs the competition to celebrate New Zealand’s trees – said the “extraordinary” northern rātā had earned the name “The Walking Tree” because of its resemblance to one of JRR Tolkien’s sentient tree-like Ents. The 32-metre tall tree, which grows near Karamea, on the west coast of the South Island, “captivated the hearts and imaginations of New Zealanders with its unique appearance and fascinating life story”, the association said. The tree was the clear winner in the third annual competition, gaining 42% of the total votes and beating out other well-known favourites, including the country’s most photographed tree – a willow that emerges out of Lake Wānaka and has become so recognisable it has gained its own social media hashtag: #thatwanakatree.”

Rafael Nadal and Roland-Garros – it’s perhaps one of the greatest tennis love stories of all time. A record 14 victories have come his way on the clay courts of Paris and fans have flocked to see him each time, watching as he went from a fired-up long-haired teenager to a 38-year-old hamstrung by injury. Rafa, with his quirks and tics and rituals, his astonishing athleticism and his blistering forehand, became a favourite and his appearance at the French Open this year was eagerly anticipated.

If you are like me, you will need mental health breaks to maintain your sanity this year. For my part, I am starting my day with a great song, working alphabetically by song title (note: this does not mean a single song per letter). It took about a day to do the beat, three hours to write the lyrics, then about an hour to record it. When the vibe’s right, the shit’s right. We’d just go in and attack.” — DJ MuggsThe Richard Cheese version is one of his best:Yesterday: In the End, Linkin Park

Specsavers in the Irvine shopping mall welcomed people from across the town to view their new look shop last weekend. As previously reported, the expansion, part of a £350,000 investment in the town centre, sees the shop have nine testing rooms, a dedicated room for fitting and checking contact lenses and two dedicated audiology testing rooms.. This investment will also make the Irvine store one of the largest Specsavers stores located in the west of Scotland. The Irvine store is now a dedicated audiology hub which can provide key hearing care support such as hearing tests, wax removal services and support with fitting and repairing hearing aids. New audiology director, Jayne Vallance, has also joined the team to lead this dedicated service in store.

Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak said a hike in ticket prices at the Etihad would allow for more investment in the team on the pitch. Al Mubarak addressed criticism from supporters at a rise of five per cent in season ticket prices for next season and explained why the decision had been made in his end-of-season interview with club media. Supporters groups have protested against the decision and said some matchgoing fans were being priced out of attending games at the Etihad. Al Mubarak said discussions were still taking place with fans in an attempt to find a solution. I appreciate the feelings of our fans when it comes to a very important aspect, which is the price of a ticket," said Al Mubarak.

It’s not really a law suit more arbitration, but could go to the courts. The original ‘Associated Party Transaction’ rules were rushed in around the Newcastle Saudi takeover. Most Premier League clubs are against it, and by its nature and with rumours it may effect the latest EFl deal (not sure how) then all other English football clubs. The pyramid needs flattening, the sports live on variety and the excitement of not knowing who might win a game or league. It’s like if Ed Sheeran decided to put his entire wealth into a two year deal for lowly Ipswich.

The honest answer is that it’s hard to say exactly what would happen if a UK university did go bankrupt because it has never actually happened. The closest a UK higher education institution has come to catastrophe was arguably when, in 1987, the then University College Cardiff (UCC) was plunged into financial crisis by the Thatcher government’s dramatic cuts to university funding. But a lot has changed in terms of how UK higher education runs since the 1987 Cardiff crisis. It’s a safe bet that Braverman’s constituents include students and staff from the University of Southampton, Southampton Solent University and the University of Portsmouth. A university collapse, he fears, would prompt would-be students to worry that any institution they enrolled at might collapse too.

Japan's parliament enacted a law Wednesday to expand monthly child allowances and parental leave, as the government seeks to tackle the country's declining birthrate through more equitable burden sharing. The state plans to collect 600 billion yen in fiscal 2026 under the new scheme, rising to 1 trillion yen in fiscal 2028. The launch of the new "child support fund" is based on the view that the costs should be shared more broadly and fairly to address the common challenge of boosting the number of children. The current monthly allowance for a third or subsequent child will be doubled to 30,000 yen, with the measures slated to take effect from October. The law also includes legalizing public support for "young carers," or children who routinely look after their family members, as the government seeks to eliminate regional disparities in providing assistance.

Sam Heughan is hoping to catch Taylor Swift's eye when she plays at Murrayfield this weekend. And the Outlander star reckons she won't be able to resist the "man in a ginger wig" when she spots him in the crowd. In a video clip, he said: "We're going to see Taylor Swift play in Scotland and I think most of the cast is going." He jokingly added: "She obviously doesn't know this, but when she comes to Scotland and sees me in the audience she's going to forget all about...him and fall for a man in a ginger wig. She's going to shake him off and take me out instead."

Astronomers have discovered carbon in a galaxy that formed 350 million years after the Big Bang. The discovery indicates the possibility of the existence of conditions for the origin of life almost immediately after the appearance of the first galaxies in the universe. Carbon, important for the formation of the first planets and life, was considered a rarity in the early universe. This does not change the time of the origin of life on Earth about 3.7 billion years ago. This indicates that the key elements for life already existed in the early universe.

With under two weeks to go until the summer transfer window opens, Premier League clubs are working around the clock to finalise their plans ahead of what promises to be a sensational few months of drama. Chelsea have kickstarted their window in good style by hijacking Newcastle’s move for Tosin Adarabioyo, with the free agent set to become the first signing of Enzo Maresca’s tenure. Manchester United were also interested in the centre-back and Sir Jim Ratcliffe will be forced to turn his attention to alternative options, with Lenny Yoro and Ousmane Diomane among those linked with a move to Old Trafford. Liverpool and Arsenal are also in the market for defensive reinforcements, with both clubs respectively believing that bolstering their backline options will help them close the gap on last season’s champions Manchester City.
