UK leader Rishi Sunak apologised on Friday for leaving the D-Day anniversary commemorations in northern France early to conduct a television interview during Britain's general election campaign. Opposition politicians accused Sunak of bringing "shame" to the office of prime minister by skipping a major international ceremony with other world leaders in Normandy on Thursday. "After the conclusion of the British event in Normandy, I returned back to the UK," Sunak said in a post on the social media site X. Beleaguered Conservative leader Sunak said in his post that the anniversary "should be about those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country". Sunak, British leader since October 2022, is widely tipped by pollsters to lose the election on July 4, with Labour expected to return to power after 14 years in opposition.

Jun 07, 2024 09:00:00Researchers discover the main cause of inflammatory bowel disease, which affects at least 7 million people worldwideInflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD), which includes the designated intractable diseasesCrohn's disease and, is said to affect one in ten people in the UK and approximately 5% of the total population worldwide. Until now, the cause of IBD was unknown, but the Francis Crick Institute and others have revealed that they have succeeded in identifying the biological pathway that is the main cause of IBD. The enhancer discovered by the research group was only active in macrophages, which play a major role in inflammatory responses, and enhanced the function of a gene called 'ETS2.' Furthermore, the research group demonstrated that many genes previously believed to be associated with IBD are part of the ETS2 pathway, and that the ETS2 pathway is a major cause of IBD. When actually tested, it was found that the MEK inhibitor not only suppressed macrophages, but also the inflammatory response in intestinal samples from IBD patients.

Today is the 80th anniversary of D-Day, when Allied troops rocked up Nazi-controlled Normandy. British and Canadian troops were obviously involved in D-Day, and there are special memorials and commemoration events held on other beaches and at other sites. These photos are of President Emmanuel Macron and First Lady Brigitte Macron greeting King Charles and Queen Camilla at the British Normandy Memorial in Ver-sur-Mer. Apparently, Charles and Camilla will not join the world leaders on Omaha Beach today in a somewhat last-minute change. At Ver-sur-Mer, Charles gave a moving speech in which he echoed his grandfather’s words:Eighty years ago on D-day, the 6th of June 1944, our nation – and those which stood alongside it – faced what my grandfather, King George VI, described as the supreme test.

The most exciting thing about The Serial Killer’s Wife (Virgin Media One, Thursday, 9pm) is its title. It suggests a pacy thriller ripe with murder and marital intrigue. There is some of both in the adaptation of Alice Hunter’s bestseller, which comes to Virgin Media following its debut on Paramount+, but not enough of either to rescue the show from a suffocating dreariness. READ MOREThere is a specific British genre of thriller in which a woman’s middle-class life is ripped to tatters after she commits the unforgivable sin of being a bit smug. The Serial Killer’s Wife belongs to the same milieu but feels second-rate.

A UNESCO advisory body has recommended that Japan provide additional details regarding its submission of a gold and silver mine complex on Sado Island for World Heritage list registration, Japan's cultural affairs agency said Thursday. There are cases where the World Heritage Committee, which makes the final decision, still decides to inscribe despite the advisory body's recommendation. An Agency for Cultural Affairs official said the UNESCO body's referral recommendation means it "has recognized (Sado) has value worthy of consideration for registration." Japan's Council for Cultural Affairs selected Sado mine as a candidate in December 2021, aiming for UNESCO registration in 2023. If the inscription of Sado mine is approved, Japan will have a total of 26 World Heritage sites.

The cruise was the second pre-wedding bash and it set sail on 29 May. But the bash rubbed Portofino locals and businesses the wrong way as access to the entire bay was blocked, preventing residents and other tourists from being able to visit. Mike Lynch, a British software mogul who was once one of his country’s most celebrated chief executives, was acquitted of fraud on Thursday in San Francisco federal court, clearing him of charges that he had led one of the biggest frauds in the technology industry. A jury found him not guilty of falsely inflating revenue at Autonomy, the company he founded and led, when he sold it to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion in 2011. Mr. Lynch, 58, who faced decades in prison, had initially been charged with 16 counts of fraud and conspiracy, though one fraud charge was eventually dismissed. Thursday’s verdict, after a trial that began in mid-March, is a milestone in Mr. Lynch’s decade-long odyssey to clear his name.

LIFE as an architect in mid-20th-century Britain was not, it seems, all work, work, work. © John EastAll Saints’, Darlaston, in Walsall, designed by Richard Twentyman, was dedicated in October 1952. Twentyman may not have personified the Protestant work ethic, but he was no slouch, and his work amply repays revisiting. One can only hope that other authors prove similarly willing to undertake research into equally neglected architects and correspondingly disregarded modern churches. Minimum pricing can be very effective in reducing demand for cheap high-strength alcohol amid concerns about affordability fuelling problematic drinking - according to a study on the impact of the measure during the COVID lockdown. As a flat-rate form of minimum prices applying to all alcohol products based on their alcohol content, Scotland and Wales were among the first countries in the world to implement a MUP policy in 2018 and 2020, respectively. However, this is not the pattern they observed over the full six months after the MUP introduction in Wales. Similarly, as in Scotland, MUP appears to have had a persistent demand-dampening effect on cheap alcohol. Wales and Scotland used their devolved powers to introduce the same MUP, at fifty pence per alcohol unit (50ppu), applicable to all beverages.
