National security strategies that fail to take account of the climate crisis are “dangerously narrow”, and will leave countries open to “a new world disorder” threatening famine and conflict, the UN’s climate chief has warned. For any leader who is serious about security, climate action is mission critical, as climate impacts wreak havoc on every population and economy.”Leaders and high-ranking officials from dozens of governments will gather in Munich this weekend for an annual conference on security. AI also appears on the list of actions, but “climate action implementation” only makes it in as the eighth item. Sieber called for the Cop31 action agenda draft to be rewritten. “It is essential that the co-presidencies highlight the phaseout of fossil fuels, which devastate local communities and exacerbate the climate crisis.”

The top adviser to the EU’s highest court has said it should annul a decision by the European Commission to unfreeze billions of euros of payments to Hungary that had been suspended because of serious concerns over corruption and the rule of law. A year later, it concluded Hungary had made sufficient changes to meet the requirements for the money to be released and lifted the suspension, making the country eligible to receive about €10bn from various EU funds. The European parliament filed a complaint in 2024, claiming the EU’s executive had made “manifest errors”. Some MEPs said the commission’s decision, just before a key EU summit that needed Orbán’s support for aid to Ukraine, was politically motivated. EU law experts have said that if the court does side with parliament, the commission may have to recoup the money by reducing future funding.
Five separate plots to assassinate Syria’s president or his senior ministers were foiled last year, the UN has said in a report on Islamic State. A separate regional intelligence official also confirmed last autumn that Sharaa had faced assassination attemptsthat were foiled after Syria’s security establishment was provided with intelligence from a neighbouring country on the plots. The group published photos of Sharaa meeting the US president, Donald Trump, as proof that he had turned towards the west and abandoned his Islamist roots. The UN estimates the group has 3,000 fighters across the two countries, the majority of whom are in Syria. Damascus now controls al-Hawl camp, where almost 25,000 relatives of suspected IS fighters reside, which analysts warn is a “ticking timebomb” for the radical group.
Portugal is under pressure to draw up plans to adapt to the climate emergency as the country continues to be lashed by an unprecedented series of storms that have killed at least 16 people and left tens of thousands without electricity. View image in fullscreen The extreme weather has caused the deaths of at least 16 people and destroyed homes and businesses. As the storms rage on, scientists and experts have criticised the country’s unwillingness to adapt to the bouts of extreme weather that have been plaguing the Iberian peninsula in recent years. “Portugal still handles land-use planning thinking about the 19th century or the first half of the 20th century climate. The world is closer than thought to a “point of no return” after which runaway global heating cannot be stopped, scientists have said. Continued global heating could trigger climate tipping points, leading to a cascade of further tipping points and feedback loops, they said. This would lock the world into a new and hellish “hothouse Earth” climate far worse than the 2-3C temperature rise the world is on track to reach. At 3-4C, “the economy and society will cease to function as we know it”, scientists said last week, but a hothouse Earth would be even more fiery. The scientists said then that the “impacts of a hothouse Earth pathway on human societies would likely be massive, sometimes abrupt, and undoubtedly disruptive”.
Switzerland will vote this summer on a proposal from the far-right Swiss People’s party (SVP) to limit the country’s population to 10 million, a move that would threaten key agreements with the EU and, opponents say, cripple the economy. The government said on Wednesday the referendum on the SVP’s “No to a 10 million Switzerland” initiative, which is strongly opposed by both chambers of parliament and the business and financial services community, would be held on 10 June. The initiative would oblige the Swiss government and parliament to act if the country’s permanent population, currently 9.1 million, exceeds 9.5 million by denying entrance to newcomers, including asylum seekers and the families of foreign residents. The SVP, the country’s largest political party, says the “population explosion” is inflating rents and straining public infrastructure and services to breaking point. However, a poll in December revealed broad support from 48% of voters for the “No to a 10 million Switzerland” initiative, reflecting deeply divided sentiment about how open the country wants and needs to be in a fast-changing world.
Reading, writing and learning a language or two can lower your risk of dementia by almost 40%, according to a study that suggests millions of people could prevent or delay the condition. After adjusting for factors such as age, sex and education, researchers found higher scores in lifetime enrichment were associated with a 38% lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease and a 36% lower risk of MCI. The study also did not prove that lifelong learning reduces the risk of dementia, as it only showed an association. “This new research shows that staying mentally active throughout life can cut the risk of Alzheimer’s disease by nearly 40%,” she said. “This supports what we already know about the preventive steps people can take to reduce their risk of developing dementia.”
