We have points, major points of agreement, I would say, almost all points of agreement ... we've had very strong talks, Mr. Witkoff and Mr. Kushner had them," Trump told reporters in Florida. "With Iran, we've been negotiating for a long time, and this time, they mean business," Trump said. STRIKES ON POWER PLANTS POSTPONEDEarlier on Monday, Trump backed down on a threat to target Iran's power network, saying he would postpone any strikes on power plants and energy infrastructure. All options to end the Iran war are badIran has two main strategic advantages in fighting the war against the United States and Israel: 1) control of the Strait of Hormuz and 2) vulnerability of the Gulf countries (GC) to Iran’s sabotage and attacks. For most of the 92 million Iranians, this conflict is a religious war and existential war – a war to the finish against the Great Satan, the United States, and the Small Satan, Israel. No wonder, Iran is in no mood to end the war. Because of Iran’s advantages, no one – not even Donald Trump of America, Mojtaba Khamenei of Iran, Netanyahu of Israel – knows when and how to end the war. “Having been attacked twice while in talks with America, Iran is understandably hesitant about another round.

Almost 1 in 3 vehicles sold“We forecast a 30 percent market share of EV from total vehicle sales for both passenger cars and commercial vehicles,” EVAP chairman emeritus Ferdinand Raquelsantos said in a Viber message yesterday. Last year, sales of electrified vehicles covering hybrid electric vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and battery electric vehicles reached 58,905 units, accounting for 12 percent of total automotive sales. In 2024, the share of electrified vehicle sales in total automotive sales was only at 5.5 percent. Amid the recent surge in oil prices, he said electrified vehicles are considered part of the solution. While demand for electrified vehicles continues to grow, he said there are also customers considering other choices such as smaller vehicles with low displacement engines.

‘Fiscal tightening a drag on growth’In a report, Nomura said “fiscal tightening intensified at the start of the year” and is likely to “point to a further drag in near-term growth momentum,” particularly as the ongoing Middle East war adds downside risks. MANILA, Philippines — Aggressive fiscal tightening at the start of the year is emerging as a key drag on the Philippines’ near-term growth outlook, with Nomura Global Markets Research warning that weak government spending and rising external risks could weigh on economic momentum. In a report, Nomura said “fiscal tightening intensified at the start of the year” and is likely to “point to a further drag in near-term growth momentum,” particularly as the ongoing Middle East war adds downside risks. “While this swing is attributable to tax revenue growth remaining positive, as BTr has emphasized (though slowing sharply), we think the bigger driver was the sharp drop in spending growth,” the report said. This weak fiscal impulse comes at a critical time for the economy.

Lawyer on Comelec’s Marcoleta ruling: One for the booksSenators Rodante Marcoleta address the media during a press conference held at the Senate in Pasay City on January 20, 2026. MANILA, Philippines — Election lawyer Romulo Macalintal slammed the decision of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to clear Sen. Rodante Marcoleta of the complaints against him for not disclosing P75 million worth of donations during his Senate campaign. Marcoleta argued that the amount was donated to him before he was declared a candidate, citing past jurisprudence. “If the donation was given when Marcoleta was not yet a ‘candidate,’ how can Section 99 be applied to the donors? If Marcoleta was not a candidate when he took the money, then the money was not an ‘election contribution’ – it was practically a private gift.

The EU said Monday a free trade agreement with South American bloc Mercosur will provisionally enter into force on May 1 -- despite a pending court ruling on its legality. "Today is an important step in demonstrating our credibility as a major trading partner," EU trade chief Maros Sefcovic said. "The priority now is turning this EU-Mercosur agreement into concrete outcomes, giving EU exporters the platform they need to seize new opportunities for trade, growth and jobs." "Provisional application ensures the removal of tariffs on certain products as of day one, creating predictable rules for trade and investment," the European Commission, in charge of EU trade policy, said Monday. The EU had already signalled in February it would provisionally implement the deal, prompting a public split between its two largest member states France and Germany.

EDITORIAL — Another broadcaster killed, and countingThere’s a presidential task force to promote the security of media workers. Yet in the nearly four years since President Marcos took office, eight media workers, most of them radio broadcasters, have been murdered. A ninth victim, radio commentator Federico Gempesaw, was shot outside his home in Cagayan de Oro on the eve of the President’s inaugural in June 2022. One of the passengers in the SUV shot Calo in the head, killing him. Whether or not the attacks are work-related, every unsolved murder fuels impunity and the certainty of more attacks.
