The Father of Nation MAJ, wanted this country to be a democratic welfare state, with a constitution as supreme law and all institutions working within the confines of the constitution. Unfortunately, since 1953, Jinnah’s vision has been trampled upon and today we are at the brink of a crippling economic quagmire. Those involved in power politics are playing upon political polarization, exploiting religion, ethnicity etc., making the process of economic recovery uphill. Had PTI not been voted out through a constitutional no-confidence vote, they would have faced the brunt of the anger from the electorate. In fact, the No-Confidence vote has helped PTI’s resurgence and shifted blame upon those who had to take tough decisions required from Pakistan to meet the IMF conditionalities, given the enormity of the widening gap between state revenues and expenditure, a legacy of abuse of power, pilferage and needless waste.

It is the North Korean invasion of South Korea and the American and western response to it. It is said that Stalin who was in power in 1950 encouraged Kim II Sung in Pyongyang and green-lighted this invasion of South Korea. There is rising talk that an anti-western alternative order may replace this dual purpose and hypocritical western world order and the two countries that would lead the creation of such an order will be Russia and China. Russia in its turn challenges the American-led order of western internationalism which harbours different ground rules for different states. What the US and the western world need to realise is that these three great civilisations don’t necessarily share the western values or the international institutions that promote these values.

The martyrdom of Gen Sarfraz is, indeed, a great loss for us and his vacuum will be felt for long. In his last video message, Gen Sarfraz lauded the sacrifices rendered by Pak Army to ensure law and order in the country.
