On 8 October 2004, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) unanimously adopted Resolution 1566, concerning threats to international peace and security caused by terrorism. Indian state-sponsored assassination of Canadian national Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil fits into the definition of criminal acts, offences and terrorism as elaborated in Resolution 1566. Observers believe that the murder of Nijjar by Indian state agents should lead to closer scrutiny of activities of RAW in Western countries and Indian diplomats working undercover in Indian diplomatic missions abroad. Indian actions in Canada also appear to have taken their toll on the US-India relations. The recent turmoil in the Indian state of Manipur serves as a troubling illustration of the persistent rise of Hindu extremism under Modi’s leadership.

Rolling yards was a regular part of my teen years too. I’m still quite immature, but I gave up rolling yards a while back. The interesting thing about rolling yards and other forms of relatively harmless teen-age mischief, is that it was usually reserved for people we liked. And now I’ve discovered that yard rolling is still alive and well. I’ve been told by authorities that rolling yards is illegal and the homeowners can have the perpetrators arrested.

From Atif Aslam reaching new heights of fame with his Bollywood portfolio to the legendary Naseeruddin Shah’s role in the 2007 Shoaib Mansoor film Khuda Kay Liye, it was customary to see artists advocate for cordial ties between the neighbouring countries. Recently, the Bombay High Court dismissed a legal petition urging the Indian government to prohibit any professional associations with artists from Pakistan, according to Livemint. Fans of renowned singer Atif Aslam, whose repertoire has too often provided a musical backdrop to Bollywood’s romance and heartbreak, are especially thrilled to see the artist’s return. “Atif Aslam is coming back?” exclaimed one user on X. “If I get a movie with Shah Rukh Khan and Fawad, I’ll start believing in God again,” another X user claimed.

In Pakistan, the population is burgeoning rapidly at a growth rate of 2.55% annually and, according to United Nations estimates, is ranked as the 5th most populated country in the world. The growing population has proven to be an agent of meteors’ arrival; one of them is child labor. As the saying goes, “for a nation, children are shining stars in the sky,” but in our sky, stars don’t shine anymore because it has clouded itself with labour and scrounging. Uncontrolled population surge plays the role of gravitational force in escalating the velocity of falling meteorites. To stop meteorites from falling, dealing with the gravity of a burgeoning population is more of a concern.

In the new emerging global scenario, nations, big and small, are entering into new partnerships and alliances to strengthen their power base and to create new sets of opportunities. Today, India is the second largest importer of oil from Saudi Arabia (USD 25.6 billion), only behind China (USD 48.7 billion). A traditional US ally, Saudi Arabia has established close ties with China which is currently the largest importer of its oil. We also need to create new partnerships and alliances, for now with groups sans India. The potential addition of China, Saudi Arabia and the UAE to the ECO could make it a formidable economic group.

The Curva Fiesole came out with a throwback theme for the day, which looked marvelous and probably provided the highlight of the match. Nicolò Cambiaghi got loose and had a shot that clattered off Francesco Caputo, who also missed a free header from a corner. The goal was well-deserved as Alberto Grassi got in behind unmarked and crossed for Caputo’s lovely finish, but the Viola defending was truly woeful. With Fiorentina reeling, Caputo nearly added a second just before the break, stooping for a header that was ruled out after a VAR check for the slightest of handballs. Losing to Empoli here isn’t a catastrophe, but a win would’ve vaulted the Viola past Napoli and into 4th.

A strategic approach, bolstered by efficient governance and international collaboration, is essential to navigate these hurdles and ensure the timely and successful completion of these vital projects. Pakistan’s progress depends on overcoming these obstacles and forging a path towards sustainable development.

The IMF is an international institution of 190 member countries. Such anti-growth policies, delivered in line with the IMF diktat, have been shown in the majority of cases to have actually increased countries’ dependence on the IMF over time. Unless and until the IMF alongside its partner the World Bank changes the modus operandi, over time their influence will diminish on the global stage. For the last 10 years, China has increased its loans in billions through the policy banks: China Exim Bank. Only these changes can promote sustainable economic growth and prosperity for the poverty-stricken Global South and keep the IMF’s influence intact as a global financial institution.

photo: fileIf I tell you that the stock market index has just crossed 50,000, then it must not be news for you if you are still investing in the market and watching the index on a daily, if not hourly, basis. The period from 2013 to 2017 was a remarkable chapter in the history of Pakistan stock market, characterised by an enthusiastic surge in performance, primarily attributed to the initiation of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). This transformative project not only shaped Pakistan’s economic landscape but also ignited investor optimism, particularly impacting sectors crucial to CPEC. The announcement and subsequent initiation of the CPEC project brought a wave of optimism to Pakistan’s economic horizon. However, the cement sector went ahead of itself by announcing a huge expansion, and the resultant price war and the later struggle for market share resulted in oversupply.
