The November result brought the expected rise in services hiring, but an unexpected fall in manufacturing job levels. US exports of goods and services came in little different in October than September (-1.0%), but were +1.3% higher than year-ago levels. They held its target for the overnight rate at 5% for a third consecutive meeting, in line with market expectations, leaving borrowing costs at a 22-year high. The Australian 10 year bond yield is now at 4.23% and down another -6 bps from yesterday. That all means our TWI-5 starts today just on 70.7 and up +20 bps from this time yesterday.

But this approach assumed that even if global real interest rates rose, any increase would be gradual and temporary. The possibility that a sharp rise in interest rates would dramatically increase interest payments on existing debt, including debt held by central banks as bank reserves, was simply dismissed. While the world can certainly adapt to higher interest rates, the transition is still ongoing. The European Central Bank’s “whatever it takes” bailout policies appeared costless when interest rates were near zero, but it is unclear whether the bloc can survive future crises if real interest rates remain high. Moreover, while major emerging economies have managed to cope with high interest rates so far, they face enormous fiscal pressures.

Blasting local venues this summer with his industrial synth crust sonics, Schkeuditzer Kreuz unveiled Second Life: No Life Left Remixed late last week — as the name suggests, a collection of reworks from the artist's second album No Life Left. Roaming from ear-scraping breakbeat-scapes reminiscent of Tetsuo: The Iron Man to pulse-pounding EBM to skull-trepanning powernoise to mind-mashing doom, Second Life: No Life Left Remixed provides an ominous appetiser before Schkeuditzer Kreuz's first ever NZ tour. So, to hear people strip it down to its barest components and then build it back up into something new, in their own image – this is awesome to me. I love it when they’re ruthless and pay no heed to the original at all. Fuck, but I could not be happier – from crazy glitched out breakcore weirdness to oozing, sludgy heavy doom stuff to dancey as fuck 80s synth goth.
