Emerging Hurricanes loose forward Peter Lakai aims to hit the ground running when pre-season training resumes in January. Lakai had welcome news soon after the Hurricanes started their pre-season at the end of November when he had the cast removed after he suffered a scaphoid injury. Lakai came into the Hurricanes in 2023 after significantly contributing to Wellington's 2022 Bunnings NPC and Ranfurly Shield success. Julian Platt praised the police response to the massacre at Al Noor Mosque but said the attack on Linwood Islamic Centre could have been disrupted. Police deployment to Al Noor Mosque was quick and actions taken were appropriate, Platt told the Coroners Court. The call gave police access to information about the Linwood attack as early as 1.45pm, he said. A senior police tactical expert last week told the inquest it would be "idealistic" to think police could have stopped the Linwood attack. "Based on this assessment, it appears an opportunity to pre-empt or disrupt the Linwood attack was a possibility, although the timings appear tight."

Last week Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown kicked off what is always the most important thing a Council does every three years – update its ‘Long term plan’. So – perhaps surprisingly – it has been quite refreshing seeing Mayor Brown really fight for Auckland to get a better deal from ‘Wellington’. As Transport Minister, Local Government Minister and Minister for Auckland, it is clear that the relationship between the two Browns (presumably unrelated) will be critical. Fundamentally the big question for the government will be the extent to which they are willing to devolve meaningful power to Auckland Council, and work with them in genuine partnership. On the one hand, it was a National-led government that created Auckland Council in the first place and eventually funded things like rail electrification and the CRL.

A driveway dispute between two elderly Dunedin neighbours reached boiling point when one entered the other's home and beat him with a bat. Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said police were called to an address in Saddleview Pl in Fairfield at 10.20am yesterday after a man was assaulted in his own home. The 82-year-old man was at home when his neighbour, a 74-year-old man entered his home and attacked him using a bat. The assault was due to an ongoing dispute between the two men over their shared driveway, Snr Sgt Bond said. The 74-year-old was arrested and charged with aggravated burglary and will appear in court this morning.

Bond said police received a report that a person was walking around the streets armed with a knife and was in Mitchell Ave at 11.20am.
