In my view there is not scientific validity to the oft-repeated argument that we are threatened with a wage-price spiral. The recent rise in prices is way above the rise in wages and wages are obviously just catching up. His opponent in the debate was actually a trade union leader John Weston who thought fighting for wage rises would be a waste of time because prices would automatically follow. Orsman is one of the few journalists to have had a sit-down interview with Brown since he took on the mayoralty. “His political minders have adopted this policy of keeping Brown at arm’s length from the media early on,” Orsman said. That scrutiny will be more important as Auckland Council tries to fill a budget blowout. • You can find more New Zealand Herald podcasts at nzherald.co.nz/podcasts or on iHeartRadio.

Onions are one of New Zealand’s largest vegetable export earners. About 90% of the onions grown in New Zealand are exported. Some things that are banned from checked luggage are fairly self-explanatory. In January 2021, new rules around batteries came into effect which mean any type of loose batteries are not allowed in carry-on luggage. Other commonly removed items from carry-on bags were “sharps” – knives, blades, scissors, pocket-knives, multi-tools and box cutters – and lighters. AirPods and hearing aid chargers were commonly removed from checked bags, as they used lithium batteries. E-cigarettes were another item that should only be packed in a carry-on bag, due to the risk it contained a battery.
