The price of fresh produce may be pushed up by an outage at the only remaining domestic industrial facility that produces liquid carbon dioxide for the food industry. Todd Energy became the only domestic, commercial producer of food-grade carbon dioxide last year following the permanent closure of the Marsden Point oil refinery in March. But Todd chief executive Mark Macfarlane said it had been forced to temporarily shut down its plant, which is attached to its Kapuni natural gas field in Taranaki, late last month because of a safety issue. Carbon dioxide is often used to preserve packaged meat, cheese, and ready-prepared meals, and accelerate the growth of tomatoes and salad vegetables in greenhouses. Roelf Schreuder, production manager at NZ Gourmet, one of the country’s largest fruit and vegetable growers, said the price of carbon dioxide had risen ten times to about $3.50 a kilo since the closure of the Marsden refinery, pushing up its own costs by tens of thousands of dollars a week.

Peck has been bitten by a white-tailed spider in the past and said she saw what she thought was another spider on her bed before being bitten. It is believed that early colonists brought the much-maligned but ultimately harmless spider to New Zealand in the 1880s.

Australia’s poor innocent white-tailed spider is being blamed for causing ulcers again. This time, it’s a pregnant woman from New Zealand having a go at the spider. Renee Peck said she had two surgeries, spent seven nights in hospital and will need a skin graft from what she claims could have been a bite from the Australian white-tailed spider. Peck had been bitten by a white-tailed spider in the past and said she saw a spider she believed to be another one on her bed before being bitten. People who get a white-tailed spider bite should wash them well as some medical studies suggest that cases of blistering ulceration reported after bites may be due to a secondary bacterial infection of the wound.

A Professor has suggested it’s okay to mix them all up, but for some cultures, it’s considered disgusting. Professor of Food Safety and Microbiology at Massey University, Steve Flint, says it’s “something you shouldn’t worry about too much”. He told New Zealand’s Stuff.co.nz, “Nothing is ever sterile – all we are trying to do is reduce the risk of food safety issues”. Some cultures, including tangata whenua in New Zealand, however, find washing tea towels with your clothes unacceptable.
