Makarewa School celebrated the start of duck-hunting season by hosting a "Call of the Wild" animal calling competition on Friday, with children attending school in camouflage gear and painted faces. Best stag roar winner Jess Spence said she went duck hunting every year and calling them was the best part. Best paradise duck call winner Willow Youngman said her dad made a special mai-mai since her birthday is in May, and they used it every season. The path of future monetary policy will be partly decided by whether Chris Hipkins’ makes good on his promise to deliver a no-frills Budget that doesn’t exacerbate inflation. The Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) will likely end its rate hike crusade this month with one final increase to the Official Cash Rate in its May Monetary Policy Statement. Labour market data released on Wednesday showed the unemployment rate holding on at 3.4% and private sector hourly wage growth up to 8.2% from 8.1%. More relevant to the Monetary Policy Statement in May will be the actual spending levels contained in Budget 2023. The path of monetary policy will be (ever-so-slightly) softened if Hipkins’ sticks to his word and the government can resist an election-year, lolly-scramble budget.

Two high-profile resignations from Parliament's left-bloc could spell out trouble for Team Hipkins. Former Green MP Elizabeth Kerekere's left the party, whilst being investigated for bullying. And Former Labour MP Meka Whaitiri's jumping ship to Te Pati Maori. NZ Herald deputy political editor Thomas Coughlan says it's hard for Chris Hipkins to claim these parties are unified. "The parties that support him are kind of jumping between each other, it starts undermining the argument that he's making.

“Our point of difference is our tikanaga from home that we take with us,” Rahui Papa, kaikoorero for Kiingi Tuheitia told RNZ. The movement was properly established in 1858, when the first Māori king Pōtatau Te Wherowhero was installed, and has seen six monarchs since. Speaking to Morning Report, Chris Hipkins acknowledged that the lack of recognition for Kiingi Tuheitia was flawed. “The complete disregard of the…coronation of Kiingi Tuheitia Potatau Te Wherewhero VII and of course his mother, the late Māori Queen. In 2006, Kiingi Tuheitia was crowned and in 1966, his mother and predecessor, Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu was crowned.

A nurse from the hospital's ED agreed chronic workforce shortages would prevent many of the proposals ever working. In February, Te Whatu Ora identified Middlemore Hospital as one of eight national 'hotspots' needing extra support before the winter flu season. Former chairperson Rob Campbell admitted the workforce shortages plaguing Middlemore's ED would not be addressed in time for the flu season. "We know that pressure from shortages across our workforce is being felt on the frontlines of our health system.

Newly crowned King Charles III and Queen Camilla have emerged from Westminster Abbey for a grand procession returning to Buckingham Palace after his coronation. Charles was wearing the Imperial State Crown and an ermine-trimmed purple velvet robe as he paced slowly through the cavernous church to the strains of “God Save the King”. Rain was falling as the king and queen exited the church but they were protected by a see-through tent that led to the Gold State Coach, a gilded carriage that has been used in every coronation since 1831.
