First Newshub fell, then TVNZ killed two of its most popular current affairs shows, then Stuff started making ThreeNews. Just last week, Google made public its intention to shut down news on its platforms should a contentious bill pass. Now TVNZ is proposing to shut down 1news.co.nz from early 2025 – should that eventuate, New Zealand will have lost two of its five most-read news sites in less than 12 months. 1news.co.nz attracts a monthly audience of roughly 1m, and over the past couple of years it has developed a distinct tonal identity. Six months ago we went through the same process, with the end result that the core video teams which created Sunday and Fair Go left the building, while Re:News was significantly downsized.

Not the First World War, and certainly not the Second. Lest any reader assume that all such unabashed imperialist notions, following the horrors of World War II, had been set aside by the “international community”, here’s a memory-jogger from 1990-1991 – the Gulf War. Dominated, overwhelmingly, by the military resources of the United States, the Coalition made short work of Saddam’s army. The United States, the nations of Western Europe, and many of the Arab oil-states, would have unleashed upon Yemen the same overwhelming force that pummelled Iraq. Even the United States, the great hegemon, is no longer equal to the task of preserving freedom of navigation along the Suez Canal.

Highlanders and Otago lock Fabian Holland, who moved from his native Netherlands to New Zealand when he was 16 to pursue a rugby career, could today be named in a black jersey. Stuff yesterday reported a tweak to eligibility laws meant Holland was now qualified to represent his adopted land. That means he could today be named in either the All Blacks for their five-test northern tour or the back-up All Blacks XV for two games in Europe. Holland certainly has that, having become an integral part of both the Otago NPC team and the Highlanders, and a popular member of the Dunedin club. New Zealand Rugby told Stuff that Holland, who turns 22 on Wednesday, would be given the green light.

Many people over the age 65 are still in the paid labour force. (There are other great pressures for more government spending which also demand higher tax rates. I leave you to judge whether the proposal to raise the age from 65 to 67 was courageous or timid; I think it is the wrong strategy. The eligibility age should not be jumped up but rise incrementally, as it did under the Richardson-Cullen scheme. A second strategy is to abate more strongly the NZS of those on higher incomes.

However, Kāinga Ora now says it will close the ground-floor community room after 4pm to stop residents drinking alcohol in it.
