Midge, a 2.8-metre female, was initially tagged near Stewart Island and travelled north through the Tasman Sea to Tonga. She then lost her satellite tag near Stewart Island after completing the migration of more than 3000km. Midge's tracker showed the incredible migration journey of great white sharks. He said Midge’s data highlighted how certain habitats were ideal for great white sharks, including areas near Motunui Island, off Stewart Island, where the animals aggregate seasonally before their long migrations. The Great White Project is supported entirely through public sponsorship, allowing people to follow individual sharks in near-real time via the Great White App, with each tag costing $4300.

Several also wanted to see significantly more use of the stadium to give residents better value for money. Cr Mickey Treadwell called the $1.25 million of additional funding in 2026-27, to be followed by a $1.25m increase the next year, a bitter pill to swallow, but necessary. If the Dunedin City Council did not move to tackle stadium debt, it would be responsible for its insolvency down the track, he said. Councillors had earlier been warned keeping equity funding at the status quo risked sending Dunedin Stadium Property Ltd debt from $85m to $194m in 2060. Deputy mayor Cherry Lucas said the additional funding was needed to avoid setting up the stadium to fail.

When interest rates are not already close to zero, cuts in policy rates eventually help to prop up the property market. Chart 1: Economic Growth Rates (Source: IMF)Things do not look good for Luxon here. Chart 2: Unemployment Rates (Source: IMF)Again, New Zealand was a relatively strong performer until 2023 but has underperformed since. The recent self-inflicted weakness of the New Zealand economy has certainly helped drive the Official Cash Rate back down. There is no reason to see the level of New Zealand government debt as a source of economic risk.

At the most recent auction, the GDT price index posted a solid gain, with whole milk powder (WMP) and skim milk powder (SMP) among the key drivers. Whole milk powder — New Zealand’s flagship export commodity — recorded a notable lift, reflecting steady global demand and constrained supply expectations. For New Zealand exporters, higher GDT prices provide welcome support following earlier market softness. The price improvements may bolster farmgate milk price forecasts if the trend continues, though analysts warn that volatility remains elevated. The interplay between global supply, buyer confidence and macroeconomic pressures will shape price direction in coming months.

The couple, whose names are suppressed, found the mystery money sealed in plastic bricks tucked in insulation at their property in 2021. In a judgment released on Wednesday, Justice Robert Osborne decided the couple could keep $40,000 of the cash, with the rest given to the Crown. Both parties had reached a proposed settlement in the hearing, suggesting the couple be paid that amount from the cash. He said his responsibility was to determine the settlement had been reached fairly, and was consistent with the purposes of the Criminal Proceeds Recovery Act.

File photoA helicopter swinging a large hook into the side of ute, leaving a worker injured, has been blamed on a lack of "basic communication" between two prominent Dunedin companies. On February 27 last year, a Helicopters Otago pilot smashed the hook end of a 30m strop into the side of a Delta Utility Services vehicle, which had two workers inside it at the time. A longline hook was attached to the helicopter, and the pilot took off. However, when the helicopter flew forward, the swing generated caused the hook to smash into the side of the vehicle. The investigation findings released to the ODT do not reveal who was piloting the helicopter.

Waitomo Group chief executive Simon Parham told Checkpoint it would not be surprising to see the price of unleaded fuel hit $3 per litre in some places. There is concern the strait could become a chokepoint; forcing petrol and commodity prices up around the globe. Rennie opens door to Brodie Retallick returning to All Blacks as eligibility debate resurfacesRennie opens door to Brodie Retallick returning to All Blacks as eligibility debate resurfacesPhoto: Rugby PassAll Blacks Coach, Dave Rennie appears keen to succeed where predecessor Scott Robertson failed in getting New Zealand Rugby to soften its firm stance on the All Blacks’ eligibility rules. Confirmed as the new All Blacks coach today, Rennie dropped somewhat of a bombshell by declaring he would want legendary lock Brodie Retallick, who is based in Japan, involved with the test side again. Instead of dismissing it, Rennie reignited the thorny issue, one that will probably never recede because of the abundance of talented Kiwi players operating around the globe. NZ Rugby has long maintained that All Blacks can’t be selected from overseas clubs.
