Fisheries New Zealand compliance regional manager south Garreth Jay said MPI received several complaints about charter vessel operators working in the Fiordland Marine Area, including the Southern Secret. He said the crayfish would have cost between $239,610 and $244,500 on the domestic market, based on a retail value of $147-$150kg. This is illegal behaviour from a company does not hold a commercial fishing licence and is not a Licensed Fish Receiver.

Construction, freight, retail and hospitality/tourism businesses are all big improvers in Forsyth Barr’s Pulse of New Zealand Business survey. There had been a material step up in demand over the past three months and profitability expectations for the next 12 months, compared to the investment firm’s previous survey. That was consistent with businesses moving beyond stabilisation and into recovery. Medium-sized enterprises also led the charge, remaining the most positive cohort on both recent trading and the outlook. Deteriorating demand had fallen away as the dominant concern, consistent with activity in the economy improving and confidence across many sectors.
The $9 per kg barrier was broken for the first time for a crossbred hogget fleece at the recent Melbourne wool auction by Kyeburn farmers James and Sharon Scott. The Scotts sold a line of 30 micron hogget wool for $9.24kg — the top price of the day — closely followed by Charles, Pip and William Reid, of Traquair Station, near Outram, with a 24-bale line of 31 micron hogget wool reaching $8.55kg clean. The Reid family were one of the first growers to support the New Zealand Merino Company’s venture into strong wool more than eight-plus years ago. Crossbred hogget wool sold from $7.80kg while adult wool (34 to 36 micron) prices landed at $7.08 to $7.35. NZM general manager of commercial Keith Ovens was not sure he had ever seen crossbred wool sell at those levels in his 48 years involved.
