Local charity the TJ’s Way Trust was the chosen recipient of funds from the 100+ People Who Care Group during its November funding round, receiving $5800 in donations. TJ’s Way Trust chairwoman Marion Maxwell was delighted to receive the funds, which would enable the trust to expand its support to cover sports and other activity fees for an additional six to eight local children in 2026. TJ’s Way Trust was set up by Mrs Maxwell and her family after her daughter Teresa Jayne died as a result of a road accident in Australia on November 25, 2006. Mrs Maxwell said that when families ran out of money to cover fees for activities, the trust would step in to ensure the children did not miss out. "I’m very pleased with how strongly we are growing and hopeful that we might crack 100 members this year," Mr Berryman said. "The more members we have, the larger pool of funds we have to donate to our local charities. Alongside the main donation, charities often also receive direct and practical support from donors in other ways, Mr Berryman said. Last year, the 100+ People Who Care group donated about $23,000 to local charities. "The charities love the format as well — being able to speak directly to the donors," Mr Berryman said.

Otago University Students’ Association president Daniel Leamy, pictured with a campaign poster yesterday, wants students to avoid using glass bottles and switch to cans for drinking. Otago University Students’ Association president Daniel Leamy said while such behaviour was disappointing, it was displayed by "less than 1%" of the student cohort. "It comes down to the fact there’s 20,000 students in Dunedin, and it’s one bad egg in that situation that gets picked up on. "It is just that there will always be one or two people out there who ruin it for everyone else." "But the vast majority of students drink out of cans, which is more sustainable, because they’re not ending up getting smashed.

Class action weighs on ASB’s profitabilityHowever, the factor that weighed most heavily on the bank’s profitability was its decision to enter into a $136m settlement with those who brought a class action against it. While ASB agreed to settle with the claimants, who were automatically included in the class action without having to opt in, it made no admission of liability. ANZ is still fighting its corner in the class action. ASB customers unlikely to benefit from bank capital rule changeTaking a step back and looking at the economy more broadly, Shortt saw a gradual but uneven recovery. She didn’t believe ASB customers would see a difference in the cost and availability of credit on the back on the Reserve Bank changing its bank capital requirements.

The hunt is on to find a name for Gore's brown trout statue. Photo: Gerard O'BrienGore's famous giant brown trout statue is angling for an official name. The sculpture - designed by local artist Erroll Allison and built by a local engineering firm - has proudly stood in Gore for almost 40 years. The statue, capturing a trout mid-leap, is finally getting a name as part of a competition to promote the Southland town's On The Fly Festival on the Mataura River later this month. If you come to Gore, you can have an opinion on it."

Another highlight of Gore and the lower South Island agricultural scene is taking place this week with the Southern Field Days at Waimumu. That recovery means the government can focus on building a stronger future with infrastructure and public services New Zealanders need. At present many Southland patients need to travel to Dunedin three times a week for dialysis to treat kidney disease. About one-third of Dunedin Hospital’s dialysis patients come from Southland, so this will make a big difference to many people and and families in Southland and help ease pressure on Dunedin. With places like Gore, Southland and Otago contributing so much to our country, it's great to see public services being strengthened in our region to make people's lives easier.

It would also look at the coordination of monetary and fiscal policy - that is, how the bank's response interacted with the government's. "The Reserve Bank of New Zealand took unprecedented action in response to the Covid-19 pandemic," Willis said. "During Covid, the Reserve Bank lost its mind and we're still paying for it. Other criteria will have to be met under the FTA, as is already the case for green list work visas. Has Trade Minister Todd McClay been clear on the 5000 TEE visas? Will the 5000 TEEs under the India FTA be additional to current numbers? That will advantage Indian students only if the current 25 hours drops to say, 15 hours a week as a policy. It is similar - but importantly different - from an investment clause in a deal India signed with the four countries of the European Free Trade Area, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein (EFTA).

She told Jasmine that she had spoken with Oranga Tamariki and would also seek custody in the Family Court. Neither the photograph, or their analysis, was recorded on the Oranga Tamariki internal records system known as CYRAS. So I think [Oranga Tamariki] thought I was searching, stretching… like what I had to say was out the gate. Malachi Subecz was adored by his cousins in Wellington who sought legal guardianship of him in the Family Court. The District Health Board made a joint referral to Oranga Tamariki and the Bay of Plenty police, which started an urgent investigation.

File photo: New Zealand Electrical Inspectors AssociationA rule change that electrical inspectors say elevates the risk of people being electrocuted is being reviewed. The Electrical Inspectors Association wrote to the government a week ago, asking it to intervene with Worksafe. WorkSafe's Energy Safety team had commissioned an independent review by an international expert to provide assurance on their advice to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, which instituted the rule change. "The PEN conductor is the single most important wire in any electrical installation," they wrote. Now, a compliant New Zealand electrical installation with no faults present can now be lethal."

A dead possum in the Roxburgh reservoir has led to a boil water notice being put in place immediately for Roxburgh and Lake Roxburgh Village. The possum was identified during an unrelated inspection of the reservoir today, the Central Otago District Council said in a press release. Two water tankers have been available since about 5.30pm today at Roxburgh Area School and Lake Roxburgh Village Hall. The flushing under way was to ensure that any water that came out of the impacted reservoir is removed, before the boil water notice is lifted — which could be as early as tomorrow. "We know any boil water notice is an inconvenience to our communities, but we must be sure the water is safe to drink.
