JAKARTA (March 11): Indonesia's parliamentary financial commission will on Wednesday assess candidates for top jobs at the Financial Services Authority after an equity market rout in January triggered a spate of resignations. Parliament is considering 10 candidates for a total of five vacancies at the agency, known by its Indonesian abbreviation OJK. They include the current interim chair Friderica Widyasari Dewi and interim capital market supervisor Hasan Fawzi. Most of the other candidates are officials with OJK, the central bank, the finance ministry and the state deposit insurer. PETALING JAYA: A Royal Commis­sion of Inquiry (RCI) must be set up to investigate allegations of a “corporate mafia” and excessive shareholding involving Malaysian Anti-Corruption Com­mission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki, says the MCA Youth central committee. According to its central committee, the decision to submit the memorandum was unanimously agreed during a meeting on March 6. MCA Youth is also calling for Azam to temporarily step aside as MACC chief commissioner pen­ding an investigation into the shareholding controversy. This came following a Bloomberg report outlining, among others, allegations against Azam and about some businessmen, supposedly working with certain MACC officers, in a “corporate mafia” network. Azam has filed a RM100mil defa­mation suit against Bloom­berg, while MACC has also dispelled talk about the existence of a “corporate mafia”.

KUALA LUMPUR (March 10): The Dewan Negara has passed the Supplementary Supply Bill (2025) 2026 for the first additional operating expenditure for 2025 amounting to RM8.4 billion. Of the RM8.4 billion in additional operating expenditure, RM7.9 billion was tabled for approval under the Supplementary Supply Bill 2025, while RM472 million is for charged expenditures and was not debated. “The first supplementary operating expenditure estimate 2025 of RM8.4 billion was prepared to meet these needs, and this additional amount has already been included in the actual operating expenditure for 2025, which stood at RM330.8 billion. “This is still below the original operating allocation of RM335 billion approved for 2025,” he said in the Dewan Negara on Tuesday. On average, public universities’ dependence on government funding is at around 75% to 80%, particularly to cover emoluments and basic operating costs.

SANDAKAN: A 76-year-old man died after being buried by a landslide while attempting to start a generator during a power outage at a hotel in Sandakan early Wednesday (March 11) morning. According to the Sandakan Fire and Rescue Department senior operation officer Jimmy Lagung, hotel staff members had attempted to activate a generator located behind the building when the landslide occurred. Witnesses at the scene said the victim, identified as Agustine Frederick J Lingam, was partially buried by soil while trying to start the generator. A team from the Sandakan Fire and Rescue Station used shovels to remove the soil and successfully extricated the victim at 7.14am. The operation was brought under control and concluded at 8.19am after authorities secured the area and confirmed there were no further hazards.

Gas Malaysia derives about 40% of its net profit from the sale of natural gas to more than 1,000 industrial customers, according to the research house’s estimates. Every 1% change in natural gas prices can swing Gas Malaysia’s net profit by 4%, the house’s analysis showed. If the conflict leads to elevated oil prices beyond six months, “Gas Malaysia stands to benefit as higher natural gas prices translate to growing profitability", UOB Kay Hian said in a note.
