The testimonies also echoed previous accounts that the steel-hulled trawler sank in calm seas during a botched attempt to tow it. “The Greek ship cast a rope and it was tied to our bows,” survivor Abdul Rahman Alhaz said in his sworn testimony. Being in the hold, he had no first-hand account of why the ship sank and said there were no women and children in his section below decks. By the time the ship sank, they had been at sea for five days. “In the pulling, (the trawler) sank,” he said.

UN envoy Abdoulaye Bathily said Monday that a deal between Libyan rival camps over long-delayed elections contained “politically contested issues” that could spark a new crisis in the divided country. The main stumbling block he identified was “the eligibility criteria for candidates for the presidential election”. “Short of this, related provisions in the laws would surely remain unimplementable and might even trigger a new crisis,” he added. He urged Libyan decision-makers to act “in a spirit of compromise” and strike a political agreement to ensure “buy-in and inclusion of all major stakeholders”. Haftar also holds US citizenship, and his detractors accuse him of seeking to restore military dictatorship in Libya.

More than two months after the outbreak of the fighting, the United Nations fears that the scale of the crisis will spread outside the country, threatening the stability of neighboring African countries. Without strong additional support, Sudan could quickly become a place of lawlessness and spreading insecurity across the region. “Before this conflict broke out, Sudan was already experiencing a humanitarian crisis,” Guterres said. Germany doubled its contribution to 200 million euros ($218 million), while the European Union pledged 190 million euros in humanitarian and development aid. Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said that the conflict threatens a humanitarian crisis that may cross borders.

Libyan boxer Mohammed Ali Ahmed Elmushraty’s request for bail was rejected by the court on Tuesday. In decrees handed down late in the afternoon, the court rejected Elmushraty’s bail request and decreed that it had seen sufficient prima facie evidence to merit Elmushraty’s indictment. The testimony heard so far indicates there was a case for him to answer, ruled the court. Proceedings on bail came unstuck over the course of three hours, with incrementally strident submissions culminating in Elmushraty’s lawyer suggesting that the magistrate was discriminating against his client. Bail submissionsThe defence provided an address where Elmushraty would reside if granted bail and pointed out that he had returned from abroad of his own free will.

Mohamed Ali Ahmed Elmushraty, better known as Lilu King, would likely be tortured or even killed if he were to be extradited to Libya, his lawyers said on Tuesday. It also emerged that Libya is planning to seek his extradition to face charges there. In a note filed by defence lawyers Franco Debono, Marion Camilleri and Francesca Zarb, the lawyers highlighted that the accused had been granted refugee status in Malta due to “persecution” in Libya. The defence highlighted that Libya is an unstable country that has been in a civil war since 2011. “If extradition were to go through, not only would Elmushraty not be guaranteed a fair trial but there existed a ‘real possibility’ that he would tortured or even killed,” the lawyers said in their note.

The long-awaited stability in Libya is key for the region and its people, including those in the northern Mediterranean. Does anyone remember Libya other than as the port of departure after a new misfortune at sea? Libya has always been a transit country from Africa to Europe. Libya has the largest oil reserves in Africa, as well as reserves of underground water and promising mineral resources. The coast guard has also been widely criticised for not trying to rescue the migrants before their vessel sank. Instead, the ship sank in international waters two hours after midnight on June 14. “In the pulling, (the trawler) sank,” he said. “One side went up and the people fell from there into the sea,” Sheikhi told Rudaw. He said he had no choice,” Shamraiz told The Associated Press.

At a time when the fate of the elections in Libya is shrouded in uncertainty, UN envoy Abdoulaye Bathily stressed that many disputes plague the process. Bathily explained that the electoral process in Libya still faces many points of contention among Libyans, noting that these points require reaching a political agreement between the main political parties. He indicated that without reaching a complete consensus, the electoral process will face a dead end like the 2021 elections, and this will lead to a new crisis. The Security Council called for more pressure on the political parties concerned in order to overcome these differences in order to lead the country to elections, and asked the Libyan leaders to work to uphold the interests of the Libyans. It is noteworthy that the UN had confirmed that the political process in Libya had reached a sensitive stage.

A court has been asked to postpone hearings in ongoing libel cases filed by disgraced former prime minister Joseph Muscat and his wife against Daphne Caruana Galizia indefinitely, in view of a constitutional case filed by her heirs last week. “If someone is filing a case after an inquiry established that she has been murdered, how can I defend her? The lawyer pointed to the system adopted by the UK, where if either plaintiff or the defendant died before the conclusion of the libel case, the proceedings were declared extinct. “Under Maltese law this option does not exist, so I needed to file a constitutional case explaining that it is impossible for me to make a defence. Zammit Maempel argued that he could not see any other option for the Court of Magistrates but to follow the decision of the Constitutional court and put this case on hold until a definitive decision on the constitutional issue.
