Libyan Centre for Solar Energy Research and Studies reported last Tuesday that the UNDP, in cooperation with the National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB), organized a workshop on ‘‘Energy Economics’’ in Tunisia from 23 to 26 October with the aim of raising the efficiency of Libyan cadres in this field. The session was attended by several Libyan experts specialised in the fields of energy from the General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL), the Ministry of Oil and Gas, the Libyan Centre for Solar Energy Research and Studies, the Renewable Energies Authority of Libya (REAoL), and the National Oil Corporation.

The report states that Libya aims to increase gas production to 41 billion cubic meters annually, which will meet the growing local demand and enhance its export capabilities. Currently, the only green gas pipeline in Libya transports slightly over 3 billion cubic meters annually for exports. However, Libya aims to reach its full capacity of slightly over 10 billion cubic meters annually within the next three to five years. Abdel-Sadiq emphasised that Libya currently produces around 20.5 billion cubic meters of gas annually. Taparelli suggested that the current usage of the gas line, which is around 3 billion cubic meters annually, can easily be increased to 15 billion cubic meters.

The annual report by Libya’s Audit Bureau revealed that cabinet ministers under interim Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh used development funds to purchase $8.5 million worth of luxury vehicles in 2022 without proper authorization. According to the Audit Bureau’s report, Dbeibeh pproved allocating 40.5 million Libyan dinars last year to acquire 27 high-end 2021 vehicles for his ministers, violating finance laws regulating state procurement procedures and vehicle use. The report accused Dbeibeh’s government of deliberately splitting the luxury vehicles contracts into smaller purchases to skirt mandatory Audit Bureau oversight on major public expenditures. Previously in 2021, auditors flagged the acquisition of 25 expensive vehicles for the prime minister’s motorcade totaling over $4 million – vehicles that were not properly registered to the government as required. The latest audit exposes the interim government’s embezzlement of public money meant for Libya’s long-delayed reconstruction and development.

Italian Embassy in Libya has announced the landing of an aircraft carrying aid to the city of Derna and the areas affected by Storm Daniel in eastern Libya. The Embassy said in a statement on Friday the aircraft landed in Benghazi, coming from the UN Humanitarian Response Depot (UNHRD) stores in Brindisi, Italy.

The Arabian Gulf Oil Company (AGOCO) has announced the resumption of oil production from a well that had been inactive for 22 years in the Masla oil field, with a production capacity estimated at about 1,510 barrels per day. AGOCO indicated that with the help of Libyan engineers from the Reservoir Engineering, Drilling and Production Departments, it was able to convert the non-producing well (DD21-80), which has been classified as an observation well since 2001 in the Masla oil field, into a productive well.
