On Friday, the commercial vessel Nippon Princess heeded the distress call and looked for the smaller boat but could not find it. By Monday, AlarmPhone confirmed the pushback by the Libyan TBZ vessel and “condemned Malta’s role in pushbacks.”Last July, 250 people in distress on a small boat in Malta’s SAR zone were intercepted by the same vessel and pushed back to Libya. In May, a group of four humanitarian NGOs, which included Alarm Phone and Sea Watch, accused Malta of coordinating another “criminal mass pushback” of 500 migrants to prison in Libya straight from Malta’s own SAR.

Francis responded that that chaos was due in part to ‘the failure of the West in its attempt to import its own type of democracy’ in some countries around the world. Pope Francis cited the examples of Western intervention in Libya and Iraq in arguing that the West should not “export” democracy to other countries, according to a recently published interview. Francis responded that that chaos was due in part to “the failure of the West in its attempt to import its own type of democracy” in some countries around the world. “We are thinking of Libya, which seems to be led only by very strong personalities such as Gaddafi,” the Pope said. “I therefore believe that we must not export our democracy to other countries, but help them to develop a process of democratic maturation according to their characteristics,” Francis said.

ONE of the most catastrophic floods in Libya not just killed thousands and left behind tossed-up cars and heaps of rubble but also bequeathed lessons for the world. Libya, the resource-rich North African country flanked by the Mediterranean Sea, sits in a sprawling desert that constitutes 90 per cent of its land mass. Storm Daniel that hit Libya last month brought with it torrential rains and whirling wind currents. Two Wadi Derna dams constructed in the 1960s to control the floods couldn’t withstand the pressure of the torrential flows and collapsed. The tragedy of Libya is a grim reminder for Pakistan and other countries that the consequences of climate change are exacerbated by conflicts, bad governance, corruption and neglected infrastructure.

The Council of Ministers is working on a draft resolution to establish a new maritime zone under the state's authority. During a Cabinet meeting, Mohamed Al-Harari, Head of the Land and Maritime Boundaries Committee at the Foreign Ministry, said the proposed resolution allows Libya to extend its maritime borders from 12 to 24 nautical miles. "The maritime region falls within sovereign rights and does not violate international laws or infringe on the maritime borders of other countries," he explained. According to Al-Harari, the declared maritime zone along the coast - known as the contiguous zone- will not exceed 24 nautical miles from the baselines that were used to measure the width of the territorial sea. It is noteworthy that Libya did not accede to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea in 1982.
