Gbarnga, Bong County – Advocacy for women land ownership rights and call to empower women in Liberia were some of the topics that dominated a three-day workshop on the first Rural Women Land Rights Conference in Gbarnga. Burphy said the conference was also intended to identify constraints which continue which continue to impede women’s abilities to exercise their land rights. Speaking also, Stanley N. Toe, Executive Director of the Liberia Land Authority, said the conference should be a cause for celebration for the Land Rights Act, which provides for the land ownership rights of communities with customary land including the rights of women and youth, and which also provides for equal benefits for community members from the natural resources on their land, as well as rights to land through marriage, rights to land by birth in the community, and other forms of property rights. At the end of the three-day conference, women of Bomi, Bong, and Grand Gedeh Counties, and representatives from Margibi, Grand Cape Mount, Gbarpolu, Lofa, Nimba, and River Gee Counties said they were honored to be part of the first Rural Women Land Rights Conference. With the theme “Secure Land Rights NOW for Women”, the women said they can strengthen their advocacy and compel power holders and duty bearers to serve them with justice.

Many of the employees have complained that NASSCORP does not have any record on LWSC employees paying social security taxes. Mr. Dan Saryeh, former Deputy Managing Director at the LWSC is among the many employees accusing the entity of siphoning their pension money. Saryeh worked for the LWSC for about 19 months as Deputy Managing Director for Technical Services from 2018 to 2019. He informed the court through a complaint that during the period of the 19 months, the LWSC deducted 4.5% of his salary for social security benefits.

The mandate of the Committee was to work out details of the community service to be performed by the APM Terminals and to further look into the complaints of the employees against the Management of the APM Terminals. Tubman High School and made appropriate recommendations to the Leadership of the Senate which were endorsed. Tubman High School:Provide and install sixty-four (64) units of protective iron bars to classroom windows; andProvide at least two hundred (200) pieces of student arm-chairs.

MONROVIA – In order to standardize and improve the educational system of the Republic of Liberia for quality and affordable education for all without discrimination, the Ministry of Education is seriously warning against the arbitrary hike in school fees and tuition across the country as the country prepares for the reopening of schools for the new academic year 2020/2021. The Ministry is encouraging all Private school administrators including Faith-based School Secretariats to adhere to the following directives:All schools are required to submit a request for approval from the Ministry of Education for any upward adjustment in the fees or tuition using the last academic year as a baseline. Henceforth, following the review and assessment of the school’s proposal for increment, the Ministry of Education will approve or decline through an official written communication to your institution for notification. The Ministry insists that Private schools will be severely penalized for unjustifiable increment if the additional fees do not commensurate with service(s) provided by said institution. The Ministry of Education is therefore calling on all education stakeholders, students and parents for their fullest compliance and full involvement.

MONROVIA – Montserrado County Chief Prosecutor, Cllr. Edwin Martin says the premises of the Temple of Justice as no-go-zone for any group including political parties seeking to stage protests saying they risk being arrested. Martin in a press statement indicated that the consequences of these demonstrations and protests have creates tension and serious distraction in the activities of all the courts. He said this act is ugly, adding the rights and dignity of the courts and actors of the judiciary must be respected and protected at all times. “The dignity, sanctity and powers of the Honorable Supreme Court and all courts on the premises of the Temple of Justice must be respected and protected under our laws,” he said.
