Jeddah, Saudi Arabia – The Liberian delegation to the annual pilgrimage in Mecca, Saudi Arabia has arrived safely. According to a dispatch from the Embassy of Liberia in Riyadh, a special flight conveying 127 pilgrims from Liberia landed safely at the King Adul Aziz International Airport in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The flight took off from the Roberts International Airport Wednesday concluding attempts to ensure Liberia was represented at annual pilgrims to the Holy City. The pilgrims were received on arrival by officials of the Embassy as well as an array of Saudi officials from the Ministry of Hajj and Ummurah of The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Performing Hajj is one of the fundamental pillars of Islam, and as such, every Muslim who has the financial means and good health is expected to perform hajj at least once in one’s lifetime.

The Executive Protection Service (EPS) officer, Patrick Kollie, charged for shooting to death a civilian Valentine Johnson made his first appearance on July 6, at the Monrovia City Court to face his murder charge. The court records alleged that after the shooting incident, defendant Kollie immediately got in his White Hyundai Sedan vehicle and fled the scene in total disregardto the existence of human life. When the defendant reached the area, he allegedly came across some criminals who tried to molest him by impeding his movement, the court documents quoted the defendant. As soon as the criminals realized that the defendant had an arm, they took off to their heel and passed by an approaching motorbike, the court record alleged. “After the defendant realized that he had hit the wrong person, he (defendant Kollie) immediately got into his vehicle and speedily left the crime scene,” the record alleged.

The Liberia National Police, Maryland County detachment, has arrested suspect Samuel Toe, a notorious criminal following a rigorous search launched in Pleebo, Maryland county. Samuel Toe was arrested on June 26 at around 5:00 p.m. Kaydor noted that suspect Toe is undergoing investigation by the crime services department of the LNP in the county. On their 33rd day sitting, the Liberian Senate yesterday unanimously voted to pass the “Local Government Tax and Revenue Act of 2021, amending the Liberia Revenue Code of 2011 as well as the “Revenue Sharing Law of Liberia, 2021." The Local Government Tax and Revenue Act of 2021, which requires an amendment to the Liberia Revenue Code of 2011, will enable the central government to support its goal of sustainable decentralization and promote an independent revenue collection and retention process for local governments. According to the report, this Revenue sharing will be based on formulas to be recommended by the Local Government Fiscal Board and enacted into law by the Legislature. Meanwhile, the Senate has also voted to amend the Small Arms Commission Act and establish the Liberia National Commission on Arms, but removing Tenure Status and Semi-Financial Autonomy as contained in the proposed Act submitted by President George Manneh Weah. The decision by the Senate to amend the Act, followed a report from the Joint Committee on Defense, Security, Intelligence & Veteran Affairs as well as Judiciary, Human Rights, Claims & Petitions, recommending an amendment of the Act creating the Small Arms Commission to provide for the Liberia National Commission on Arms.

Report shows that at Vahun, an isolated district in Lofa County, the exercise started at 8:45am and was characterized by the late arrival of voting materials and low turn out of voters. Six candidates are vying to fill the vacant senatorial seat of Lofa County as contained on the National Elections Commission (NEC) list. Only one candidate would triumph at the end of the poll which has a total of 187,775 registered voters, according to the 2020 statistics of the NEC, with the lower part of the county accounting for 100,278 registered voters, or 53.40 per cent of the total number of registered voters.

OK FM reporter visited the UL Capitol Hill campus on Monday and observed the influx of students pouring in to attend classes, but could not see any instructors. Some of the classes are yet to be renovated, as water sets on the floor of some class rooms. Despite the lack of classes on Monday, the UL Faculty Association which did not show up for classes, promised to host a General Assembly on this Wednesday to review the decision reached with authorities of the UL.
