Yet by sending its lawyers to The Hague to contest the charges, Israel has effectively recognised the court’s jurisdiction. The people bringing the case before the ICJ are experts, too, and they are probably not just South Africans. In the Russian case, for example, it ordered Moscow to stop the war in Ukraine at least until the case was settled. Russia didn’t obey that, of course, and since it has a Security Council veto it has suffered no legal consequences. The same is true for Israel, if the American veto still protects it – but what if the court says Israel has to stop the fighting, or at least protect civilians much better?

Azimio leader Raila Odinga now says that Chief Justice Martha Koome holding talks with President William Ruto will mark the beginning of the Judiciary getting compromised. Speaking in Vihiga, Raila insisted that there is no need for the Judicial Service Commission to hold talks with Ruto. The former Prime Minister said Koome already took a position on the matter, and any dialogue efforts would only further compromise the position of the courts. Raila added that should Koome go on with the talks, she would be compromising the country. Koome said the Judiciary has written to President Ruto seeking an audience with the view to establishing the genesis of his complaints against the Judiciary.

After 277 days behind bars, the state has finally pressed charges against cultist Paul Mackenzie over the deaths of 429 people whose bodies were exhumed from the expansive Shakahola forests. Wednesday, at Malindi High Court, Mackenzie and 30 other co-accused persons will be the first to be arraigned on the charge of murder. In the nine-month investigation, the DCI was able to directly link Mackenzie and 30 others to the deaths of 238 children who were exhumed from Shakahola. At least 21 suspects who are being held together with Mackenzie, failed to account for the whereabouts of their children, court records show. To solve this debacle, it will take the willingness of the concerned departments to pass the functions and the attached resources 100 per cent. If you look at the housing project, for instance, it is a devolved function but President William Ruto is doing it as if it is a national government function. In most of these projects, you can see the national government is holding the money. Kenya Kwanza appears to be more interested in holding back a lot of cash. An example is the Trade ministry, which had been allocated a lot of money.

Residents in two settlement schemes in the Kinangop area of Nyandarua County are counting losses after a hailstorm left a trail of destruction on Monday evening. Crops, including maize, peas, potatoes, and cabbages, were destroyed, and the corrugated iron-sheet roofs of several houses caved in under the weight of hailstones. Fruit trees and several other big-leafed tree species were not spared either, as their leaves were beaten off by the large hailstones that pounded the Mwinjoyo and Mukungi settlement schemes. “The rain came as a surprise, it had been sunny for most of the day, the hailstorm came at about 5:30 pm, lasted for about 30 minutes to 40 minutes leaving major damages,” Karimi Nguyo, a resident said. Nguyo added that electricity to the two areas was also cut after trees fell on power lines compelling the residents to spend the night in the dark.

Vihiga County Commissioner Felix Watakila has asked DCI officers in his county to up their game in taming cases of security. Watakila faulted the DCI for laxity over the rising cases of insecurity. While addressing the press in his office, Watakila said DCI in Vihiga County have only one week to arrest key suspects in recent murders that have been taking place in Luanda town and Emuhaya respectively. "If DCI officers in this County are not willing to arrest those criminals, they are free to park and leave and we have new investigating officers who will do their job as required," Watakila said.
