Tangible benefitsGachagua noted that despite the rich historical and cultural ties between the two neighbouring nations, bilateral trade remained minimal. In 2022, Kenya’s exports to Somalia amounted to $124.5 million (Sh15 billion), while imports were $581,700 (Sh71.5 million). Kenya and Somalia further resolved to work together towards removing barriers to facilitate the movement of people and goods, promoting investment, and opening up new mutually beneficial markets. Somalia’s admittance to the East African Community (EAC) offers the country an expanded market, and a positive peer pressure to improve on its security and general infrastructure.
