KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has congratulated Pakatan Harapan (PH) and the Unity Government on the DAP candidate’s victory in Saturday's (May 11) Kuala Kubu Baharu (KKB) state by-election. Based on unofficial results, Pakatan's candidate Pang Sock Tao has successfully defended the seat in the four-cornered contest. "Saudara (DAP secretary-general) Anthony Loke, congratulations on the victory in the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election... a fight to victory... (and) now we defend that win,” he said. Meanwhile, Umno secretary-general Datuk Dr. Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, based on the unofficial results, also congratulated Pang. In a Facebook post, he said Pang won the state seat with a bigger majority.

The Finance Bill 2024 has proposed the introduction of a Motor Vehicle Tax, with a rate of 2.5 per cent of the vehicle's value. Additionally, an insurer of a vehicle is expected to collect and remit the motor vehicle tax within five working days after issuing an insurance cover. The Bill warned that an insurer who fails to collect and remit the motor vehicle tax shall be liable to pay a penalty equivalent to 50 per cent of the uncollected tax and the actual amount of the uncollected tax. "The Commissioner may prescribe such guidelines as may be appropriate for determining the valuation of a motor vehicle," the Bill added. The Bill contains tax proposals that the Kenya Kwanza government wants to use to raise revenue and finance its ambitious projects.

Siaya Governor James Orengo has called on the Kenya Kwanza government to uphold multi-party democracy. Addressing a gathering in Muhala, Siaya, on Saturday, the governor emphasized that as a democratic state, they will not tolerate any tactics to undermine the opposition leadership of the Raila Odinga coalition. The proposal to introduce the second option of 10 percent excise duty is contained in the Finance Bill, 2024 that is expected to be tabled in Parliament this month for debate and passage before the end of June. “The first schedule to the Excise Duty act is amended by deleting…the corresponding rate of excise duty and substituting thereof the following new description and corresponding rate of excise duty … tariff 10 percent of the value or Sh12,952.83 per unit whichever is higher,” the Bill reads in part. The National Treasury has proposed slapping value added tax (VAT) on the supply of ordinary bread in changes which would see the cost of the key consumer staple rising by upwards of Sh10. This means that bread will cost more by up to Sh11 for a 400-gram loaf if Members of Parliament are to accept the changes. The proposal to slap VAT on bread, which is charged at the rate of 16 per cent is seemingly the latest push by the National Treasury to increase its mobilisation of taxes to meet an ever-expanding national budget. Ordinary bread, along with other consumer items such as maize and wheat flour, milk and sanitary products have until now been considered important warranting their exclusion from the 16 per cent VAT. Applying VAT on the prevailing retail prices means that bread prices would rise between Sh9 and Sh21, accounting for the final VAT charge alone.
