President William Ruto and former primier Raila Odinga at Yoweri Museveni's Kisozi farm in Uganda, February 2024. [PCS]The Kenya Kwanza leadership should not use its support for Raila Odinga's bid for the coveted chairmanship of the African Union Commission (AUC) to gag him. The two leaders' demand that Raila must remain loyal to President Ruto if he wanted the Head of State to continue supporting his AUC chairmanship bid, was unacceptable. Raila's bid is not and should not be pegged on his loyalty to the President, but on his own qualifications to serve in that office. Fortunately, the President has not attached any conditions, including total loyalty as advocated by Ichung'wah and Cheruiyot, to his support for Raila.

South Africa's new uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) party is aiming to win a parliamentary majority in a May 29 election so that it can implement reforms without resistance from opponents, former President Jacob Zuma said on Saturday. An Ipsos opinion poll published in April showed MK would win 8.4% of the vote, far short of the party's 66% objective. Speaking in Zulu at the Orlando Stadium in South Africa's biggest township Soweto, Zuma promised to provide free education for disadvantaged children, create jobs and fight corruption. Zuma told the crowd he had no choice but to stay in politics because other elected officials did not care about improving people's lives. And what was the essence of the Ukrainian President’s peace plan (and the response to it from the Russians)? So, what is the historical framework within which the war between Ukraine and Russia, can be best understood? Just as the Austro-Hungarian Empire disintegrated into its constituent nationalities at the end of World War I, so too was the USSR (the successor of the Russian Empire of the First World War) to fall apart in 1990. This ended the Cold War and led to the many nations which had previously been under the yoke of the Russian Empire/USSR escaping from Russian imperialism. And the annexing of such sovereign territory has never been acceptable to the world at large.
