It was also the day that changed the life of the cult indie musician John Maus, after he was wrongly labelled a Trump fanboy – a misunderstanding that might well have destroyed his career. “Is John Maus going right-wing?” one wondered on Reddit. They’ll never let a populist left ascend. But billionaires aren’t going to have any reason to get behind a populist left – a legitimate one. A Department of Agriculture spokesman confirmed the outbreak of the highly pathogenic avian influenza HPAI H5N1, at a turkey farm in Co Cavan on Monday. This follows outbreaks at farms, all producing turkeys, in counties Laois, Monaghan, Meath and Carlow since last month. This latest outbreak comes as two flocks in Northern Ireland have returned preliminary positive results and alongside circulation of the virus in wild birds across the island. “Housing will also mean that birds are fed and watered indoors and therefore, the potential for feed or water to be contaminated by wild birds is also reduced,” says department guidance.

'My son is considering dropping out, but has no idea what he might do if he does.' As well as not liking his course, he is overwhelmed by college and life and finding it difficult to find his place. Many students find that the transition from the structure of school to the independence of college life can be challenging. However, before making any decisions, I’d strongly encourage your son to avail himself of support services at his current college. The European Central Bank has refused to backstop a €140 billion payment to Ukraine, dealing a blow to an European Union (EU) plan to raise a “reparations loan” backed by frozen Russian assets. Photograph: Kirill Kudryavtsev/GettyThe European Central Bank has refused to backstop a €140 billion payment to Ukraine, dealing a blow to an European Union (EU) plan to raise a “reparations loan” backed by frozen Russian assets. Under the European Commission plan, EU countries would provide state guarantees to ensure the repayment risk on the €140 billion loan to Ukraine is shared. But commission officials said the countries would not be able to raise the cash rapidly in an emergency, and this could put markets under pressure. The EU has frozen Russian assets worth about €210 billion since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Inside were Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskiy and first lady Olena Zelenska, who had made history before they had even got off the plane. The continuing exodus of small landlords from the rental market as reported by the Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) is an entirely predictable consequence of Government policy in this area – most recently the introduction of six-year tenancies from next March. Research from the ESRI shows that while rents remain high the rate of increase is moderating. Even allowing for such mitigating factors the fact remains that the housing shortage could last another 15 years, according to the Department of Finance, and a functioning rental market requires landlords. The Minister should not lose sight of the fact that small landlords are and will remain an important cog in the machine of a functioning property market. The chronic housing shortage means there is no shortage of buyers when they sell out, but their departure has consequences for a deeply dysfunctional rental market.
