A wealth tax is undoubtedly a matter of social justice, allowing the Government to further fund public services and invest in a secure future for everyone. Critics often argue that wealth taxes are a relic of the past, but we must look at our neighbours who successfully utilise this tool. Countries like Spain, Norway, and Switzerland maintain recurrent wealth taxes today. While assets are mobile, research shows that migration responses to wealth taxes are small relative to the potential revenue. A wealth tax is better understood as a surtax reflecting the "additional taxable capacity" and unique utility — security, power, and influence — that comes with owning vast assets.

Instead he waved his arms theatrically and screamed in Tielemans' face before shoving him towards the dugout in an extraordinary exchange. When asked about it in the post-match interview, Emery simply said: 'He is my son, he is my son.' Denmark will refuse to back any deal involving an increased United States military presence in Greenland that crosses “red lines” about its sovereignty, the country’s prime minister has said. Talks are expected to take place between the Trump administration, Denmark and Greenland on the outline of a “framework” agreement for the future security of the Arctic island. European leaders are hopeful the negotiations will resolve the dispute that has rocked transatlantic relations close to breaking point in recent days. The breakthrough which averted a confrontation between the US and Europe was brokered during a meeting between Mr Trump and Nato secretary general Mark Rutte in Davos, Switzerland, on Wednesday. Initial media reports suggest the outline of the deal sold to Mr Trump could include US bases on Greenland being treated as sovereign American territory.

Photograph: Fabrice COFFRINI / AFP via Getty ImagesTesla will probably sell its Optimus robots to the public by the end of next year, according to chief executive Elon Musk, who has said the carmaker’s fortunes will be increasingly dependent on humanoid machines. The company is already using some of the robots to do simple tasks in its factory, Mr Musk said Thursday at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. Sales to the public will begin when Tesla is “confident that it’s very high reliability, very high safety, and the range of functionality is also very high”, Mr Musk said. While Mr Musk regularly talks up the potential of Optimus, he has been relatively vague about production timelines and targets. During a January 2025 earnings call, he said his “very rough guess” was that Tesla would start delivering Optimus robots to other companies in the second half of 2026.

Welcome signs are emerging that when public transport is flexible and attuned to people’s needs — and also where safe cycle lanes are provided — they will step away from the car. For example, a new, shuttle bus service being piloted by Transport For Ireland (TFI) in Limerick city; Killarney, County Kerry, and in Achill, County Mayo, is reportedly getting an encouraging response. The bus doesn’t follow a fixed route, but takes passengers wherever they need to go within the service area. Reasons cited for not using public transport include: a lack of nearby connections, unsuitable timetables, and a preference for travelling in personal space. Unlike traditional bus services, TFI Anseo doesn’t follow a fixed route.
