Cabin crew based at the British hub held a four-day strike over pay last month that hit 18 flights and an estimated 4,000 passengers. Trade union Unite has told Aer Lingus that staff plan further stoppages between November 9th and November 18th. “The base is performing lower than elsewhere in Aer Lingus, and Aer Lingus is performing lower than elsewhere in IAG, so it’s not performing at a level that makes it attractive for investment,” she told The Irish Times. Unite said Irish staff get $171 a night for all US destinations while UK crew receive $111 for Orlando and $115 for New York. Unite maintains that its members in Aer Lingus UK struggle to pay rent and have to take on second jobs to afford essentials.

A memorial at the site of the former mother and baby home in Tuam, Co Galway. Photograph: Andrew Downes/ODAIT/PA WireInfant remains have been recovered from an excavation at the site of a former mother and baby home in Tuam, according to initial assessments. The Office of the Director of Authorised Intervention, Tuam (ODAIT), which is undertaking the work, issued an update on its work on Friday. However, ODAIT cannot say at this time whether the remains are from the workhouse era (1841 to 1918), the military era (1918 to 1925), or the mother and baby institution era (1925 to 1961) at the site. Anyone who believes they are related to someone buried at the Tuam site who has not yet contacted the organisation is invited to do so.

12 hours agoNews SummaryTesla shareholders have approved a $1 trillion compensation package for CEO Elon Musk, making it the largest corporate payout in history if Musk meets the ambitious goals set forth. Over 75% of investors voted in favor of the plan at the annual shareholder meeting in Austin, Texas. The compensation plan is structured in 12 tranches and aims for Tesla to achieve an $8.5 trillion market capitalization, deliver 20 million electric vehicles, sell 10 million autonomous driving subscriptions, and deploy 1 million robotaxis, among other targets. Critics argue that the package concentrates too much power in Musk’s hands, despite Tesla’s challenges with declining sales and safety concerns. Musk’s net worth stands at $460 billion, positioning him as the world’s richest person.

The semidetached two-bedroom bungalow in the heart of Foxrock village has an area of 47sq m (500sq ft) and a Ber of D1. The small estate is well-landscaped with ample visitor parking, an important selling point given the dearth of available parking nearby. An outhouse sits at the end of the garden, adding extra storage for garden furniture or sports equipment. The Kerb restaurant, another popular spot, is very close by, and the village also has a butcher’s and a pharmacy. Leopardstown racecourse is around the corner, Foxrock Golf Club, Carrickmines Tennis and Croquet Club and the Westwood fitness centre are all close by.

A decade ago, 31% of younger women reported drinking to excess, but this has now risen to 39%. Photograph: GettyMore young women and teenage girls are drinking harmful levels of alcohol than females in those age groups did a decade ago, a survey has found. Overall in the Department of Health’s annual Health Ireland survey 26 per cent of people reported binge drinking. However, women aged 15 to 24 are bucking this, with 39 per cent drinking at a “harmful level”, up on 31 per cent of that age cohort in 2015. Across all age groups, men continue to drink more than women, with a total of 47 per cent of men drinking at a harmful level compared to 25 per cent of women.

The first person convicted and jailed in Ireland for online posts that jeopardised the anonymity of asylum seekers has had a “priority” appeal date set in 2026. In that hearing, Judge John Hughes noted this was the first prosecution under the relevant law, which carries a possible 12-month prison term. The appeal judge granted legal aid to the unemployed appellant, who did not address the court. International protection applicants have the right to anonymity regarding their refugee application status. The incidents happened on August 22nd and August 24th, 2024, at St John’s House, a migrant accommodation centre on High Street, Tallaght, Dublin 24.

It’s also been the most successful year ever for Irish athletics (21 international medals won so far). There’s also one of my favourites, The Irish Times/Sport Ireland Sportswomen awards, just before Christmas, along with various other television and newspaper awards. For some athletes, the awards season can be a novelty, even a welcome distraction, the chance to meet and mix with teammates and athletes from other sports. I’m giving nothing away when saying Kate O’Connor could be called upon as much as any other Irish sportsperson. Kate O’Connor realises she has won the silver medal in the women's heptathlon at the World Athletics Championship in Tokyo in September.

Eddie Jones after England's loss in the 2019 Rugby World Cup final in Yokohama. He went from seeing himself as a teacher who coached rugby to a rugby coach who could always fall back to teaching if it didn’t work out. But though the peripatetic life of a pro rugby coach took Jones all around the world, Japan always had some measure of elastic attached to him. Photograph: Charlie Crowhurst/Getty Images“I couldn’t accept that they had no leadership skills,” he said in Mike Colman’s excellent biography Eddie Jones: Rugby Maverick. His Japan team are massive outsiders this weekend but he has never minded that in the past and isn’t likely to start now.

As US travellers brace for chaos at airports across the country due to government-mandated capacity curbs, technology executives flying into a conference in Portugal face an altogether more frivolous frustration: a lack of landing slots for private jets. Organisers of next week’s Web Summit in Lisbon advised speakers on Wednesday that there will be a shortage of slots at the nearby airport, which is struggling to manage the volume of incoming aircraft. “Some guests, in particular with larger planes, have found the only viable landing slots during Web Summit are now upwards of two hours drive from Lisbon, including in Spain,” the organisers wrote in an email. Web Summit’s organisers told speakers the circumstances were out of their control and apologised for being unable to help secure more slots. “We would strongly advise flying commercial,” they wrote, noting that Lisbon’s main airport is a mere 15-minute drive away.

Personal loan activity for cars, home improvement, green issues and special occasions all reached record highs in the second quarter, new data from the banks shows. The latest personal loan report, which is issued on a quarterly basis by representative group Banking and Payments Federation Ireland (BPFI), details the volume, values and uses of personal loans drawn down from banks. Among other things, Uisce Éireann says it will support housing growth.

He is more inclined to acknowledge that Uisce Éireann faces tough challenges than to criticise the organisation. The organisation adds that it “advocates for a streamlining and simplification of the multiple consents required, in addition to prioritisation of Uisce Éireann applications”. Broadly, Uisce Éireann will operate the plants and in some cases take ownership of them. Uisce Éireann has agreed voluntary wayleave schemes with Irish Farmers’ Association and the Irish Creamery Milk Suppliers Association.

Aer Lingus chief executive Lynne Embleton: fares likely to be flat going into new year. Aer Lingus also said it had received confirmation on Friday that international flights will exempted from air traffic reductions caused by the US government shutdown. That growth is the strongest across the International Airlines Group (IAG) network, of which Aer Lingus is part. Aer Lingus said competitor capacity increased by 13 per cent on North American routes last summer, and by 7 per cent in Europe. Aer Lingus has also partnered with Starlink to provide wifi on both North American and European services.

The court was told the charges arise from an investigation into an alleged terrorist attack in the planning by a right-wing extremist group. Mr Pollock has applied for bail and Judge Cody said he would make a decision on that application on Friday afternoon. Det O’Connor told the court he had no intelligence about Mr Pollock before his arrest in Portlaoise on Tuesday night. He added Mr Pollock had no previous convictions and that he was obliged to inform the court Mr Pollock had a right to trial in Northern Ireland, where he resides, if he wishes. Det O’Connor told the court that Mr Pollock had been a passenger in the car of the co-accused when arrested.
